For each of these fifteen failures:
Is it more painful if YOU experience the failure or someone who is deeply connected to you experiences the failure?
Dialogue Question:

Why isn’t the pain of failure enough to prevent people from failing?
Dialogue Question:

It is easy to use words and phrases like:

God’s will
God’s way
God’s plan
God’s purpose
What God desires
Following God’s lead
Living in step with God
Trusting God’s direction

What are they?
How do you get there?
Dialogue Question:

What are the range of emotions and responses you go through when you realize that you failed?
(internal emotions / external responses)
Dialogue Question:

What internal and external factors help turn a moment of personal failure into an opportunity for growth rather than a catalyst for further failure?
Solomon turns his trajectory:

Compromised Worship (High Places) • 1 Kings 3:3
Solomon loved the Lord, but sacrificed at the high places.
This is an early sign of partial obedience.

Political Marriage to Pharaoh’s Daughter • 1 Kings 3:1
He forms an alliance through marriage.
This foreshadows later spiritual compromise through foreign wives.

Heavy Taxation and Forced Labor • 1 Kings 5:13–14; 9:15; 12:4
He conscripts labor from Israel.
This later becomes a major grievance that divides the kingdom.

Accumulation of Wealth and Military Power • 1 Kings 10:14–29
There is a vast accumulation of gold.
He acquires horses and chariots from Egypt.
This echoes warnings in Deuteronomy 17 about kings multiplying wealth and horses.

Multiplying Wives (Foreign Alliances) • 1 Kings 11:1–3
He has 700 wives and 300 concubines.
This is an explicit violation of covenantal wisdom for kings.

Idolatry and High Places for Foreign Gods • 1 Kings 11:4–8
His wives turn his heart.
He builds altars for Chemosh, Molek, and other gods.
This is the clearest spiritual collapse.

Heart Not Fully Devoted • 1 Kings 11:4, 9
His heart “was not fully devoted to the Lord.”
God becomes angry and announces kingdom division.

Covenant Unfaithfulness • 1 Kings 11:10–13
There is direct disobedience to God’s command.
Result: the kingdom will be torn from his son.
Dialogue Questions:

What causes people to rationalize or excuse some degree of failure?
What are some of the costs to rationalizing or excusing some degree of failure?
Dialogue Question:

When we fail, Jesus comes to us repeatedly, calling us to love Him.

What is the impact on life’s trajectory as Jesus asks us, “Do you love Me?"

Jesus doesn’t start with, “Why did you fail?”
He starts with, “Do you love Me?”
Take It Deeper Questions:
Read James 1:19-27.
What is something you know things about, but have never done or participated in?
What makes someone worthy of much respect to you?
In what areas of life do you feel the need to apply God’s Word as opposed to just knowing it?
What are some of the obstacles to application?
How are you challenged, encouraged, focused, and/or confused by this text?
