The Song of Solomon

The Song of Solomon

The Song of Solomon celebrates romance as something good, joyful, and God-given. This book is about King Solomon and his peasant girlfriend who eventually became his bride. It flows through all the typical phases of a relationship. You're going to see this couple go from attraction to what we would call dating, to courting, to the wedding, to the honeymoon, to a fight because that's how life is. They fight after the verse on the honeymoon! They make up and then at the end, once they get past all the conflict, they go to a deepening of the relationship. Welcome to the Song of Solomon!

MESSAGE TEXT
Song of Solomon 1:1-4
*
INTRODUCTION
This love song is a series of soliloquies, monologues, dialogues, flashbacks or reminiscences, and dreams. A few of the brides' friends will chime into the song at various places. The Song of Solomon is a poetic celebration of passionate, exclusive, covenant love between a man and a woman. God teaches us about how to open and enjoy this gift He’s given and He teaches us this in a very unique way.
*
PRELIMINARIES
Some preliminary things that I need to talk about to really set up this message and the entire series.
*
The Structure of the Love Song as a Whole
The Form of the Love Song
The Human Author of the Love Song
The Key Perspective that the Love Song Endorses
*
PROPOSITION
Song of Solomon 1:1-4 tells you how to know if you’ve fallen in love. (Listen for these in the message).
*
Our passage also helps you to know how to rekindle love should the embers need stirred up again. After we work through these first four verses, it will become more apparent that the bride is offering to us the Rules of Marriage Intimacy (there are 15 of them all found in this opening text. These will be shared audibly and visually on a slide).
*
CONCLUSION
The only way we can get love right is to bow the knee to the King of Love. In our overly promiscuous society, have you ever wondered when you're in the grocery store that every magazine on that rack as you're checking out has an article on sex and that article on sex always has to do with a technique. Nine ways to be a better lover. Seven spots to touch. Eight ways to do this. Twenty ways to do that. Why is this?
*
When the culture says sex is god, and to do as much of this as you can with as many different people as you can – then it's not fulfilling anymore. It doesn't bring any kind of lasting joy. It doesn't bring any kind of lasting fulfillment. So, the only hope we have of intimacy and connection and sex is to better my technique and maybe if I'd become a better lover - then this aching of my soul will go away.
*
You don’t need a new technique, you need a new Savior! Only He can soothe the ache in your soul, the longing for Sacred Romance is what you’re crying out for. You don’t need an article on how to be a better lover. There was a Creator God who designed this to bring joy and happiness and then if you don't do it His way it goes really badly. As we open this “Song of Songs” accept the King of Kings and Lord of Lords today!
