What is fasting?

Fasting, in the biblical context, is the voluntary abstention from food and sometimes drink, undertaken for spiritual purposes. It is a practice that appears throughout the Bible, serving as a means of humbling oneself before God, seeking His guidance, expressing repentance, or preparing for spiritual endeavors.

Fasting to seek God’s guidance.
Fasting to express sorrow and repentance.
Fasting as a part of tradition.
Fast to draw close to God.
Why we do what we do matters.
In Jewish culture, it was normal for the family of the groom to offer a mohar or dowry to the family of the bride as a gift or a purchase price.
If Christ is the groom, who is the bride?

The bible often speaks of God's people or the church as the Bride of Christ.
Jesus loves His church, loves His people, as a groom loves a bride…and continuing with this imagery of mohar or dowry, it was and is incredibly overwhelming, to consider the price Jesus paid to make us His.
The old is not compatible with the new because the old has become rigid and inflexible.
What is the Sabbath?
Here Moses is saying to dedicate this day to the Lord.

Jesus says the Sabbath was made to meet the needs of the people. People need rest and people need God.
Why were the Pharisees making such a big fuss about this?
Compassion and mercy, the spirit of the law, is more important than the letter of the law.
The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of the people. But somehow it got twisted into the people exist for the Sabbath…as if the Sabbath was God.

Jesus is trying to help us untwist it.
