https://thechapelfh.churchcenteronline.com/givingStudy: Consider Jesus
1.Consider Jesus
The first command in this passage is not “try harder.” It is “consider Jesus.” Spiritual endurance begins with focused attention on Christ.
The word translated “consider” carries the idea of sustained, careful attention. The author assumes believers can drift not first in behavior, but in attention. The remedy for spiritual fatigue is not more religious activity, but a clearer, longer fixed look at Jesus.
Jesus is called apostle - the One sent from God to us. High Priest - the One who represents us before God. He is God’s Word to us and God’s Representative for us.
Questions & Reflection
What typically captures your attention more easily than Christ?
How does seeing Jesus as both Apostle and High Priest deepen your understanding of the Gospel?
When your faith feels weak, do you instinctively look inward or upward? Why?
Supplemental Scripture
John 1:14, 18 - Jesus as the One who makes the Father known.
Colossians 1:15–20 - The supremacy of Christ.
2 Corinthians 4:5–6 - Light shining in our hearts to give the knowledge of Christ.
2. Moses & The Son
Moses was faithful in God’s house. Jesus is faithful over God’s house. The difference is not moral but relational and ontological. Servant versus Son.
Hebrews does not diminish Moses. He is honored as faithful. But Moses is described as a servant within the household. Jesus is the Son over the household.
This is not a critique of leadership. It is a declaration of authority and identity. Only the Son can ultimately secure the house because only the Son possesses it.
The church does not belong to leaders, systems, or personalities. It belongs to the Son.
Questions & Reflection
Why is it significant that Moses is honored rather than dismissed?
What does it mean practically that Jesus is “over” the house?
What false security do people often place in human leaders?
Supplemental Scripture
Numbers 12:6–8 - Moses faithful in God’s house.
John 5:46 - Moses testifying about Christ.
Colossians 1:18 - Christ as head of the body.
3. The Big “If”
Belonging to God’s house is marked by persevering confidence in Christ. Perseverance does not earn salvation. It reveals genuine faith.
The conditional statement can feel unsettling. “We are his house if we hold fast…”
This is not performance-based acceptance. It is evidence-based assurance. Endurance is the fruit of real faith.
Holding fast is not clenching harder in self-effort. It is continuing to boast in hope. The confidence described is not arrogance but settled assurance in Christ’s finished work.
When confidence weakens, the solution is not self-punishment but renewed consideration of Christ.
Questions & Reflection
How do you emotionally respond to conditional language in Scripture?
What is the difference between weak faith and false faith?
Supplemental Scripture
Philippians 1:6 - God completing the work He began.
Jude 24 - God able to keep you from stumbling.
John 10:27–29 - No one snatching from Christ’s hand.
1 Peter 1:5 - Guarded by God’s power through faith.
4. Gospel Confidence (lit. With Faith)
Our confidence is not rooted in our grip on Christ, but in Christ’s grip on us.
Jesus was faithful where Israel failed.
Jesus obeyed where we drifted.
Jesus intercedes where we falter.
He is not merely our example. He is our substitute and our priest.
We do not hold fast to earn sonship. We hold fast because the Son has brought us into the household through His finished work.
“It is finished” is the ground of endurance.
Questions & Reflection
Where are you tempted to base your assurance on performance?
How does Christ’s priestly work protect you from despair?
How does Christ’s authority protect you from pride?
Supplemental Scripture
Hebrews 7:25 - He always lives to intercede.
Hebrews 9:12 - Eternal redemption.
Romans 8:1 - No condemnation.
Romans 8:34–39 - Christ intercedes; nothing separates.
2 Corinthians 1:20 - All God’s promises yes in Christ.
Ephesians 2:8–9 - Saved by grace through faith.
