Distinct from the World - Phil Kendon

Distinct from the World - Phil Kendon

The apostle John writes to Christians, urging them to love the Father rather than love the world. Even though there are many things that appeal to our senses in this world, there is a way of living where we trust the Father’s character and we conform to the Father’s will. Temptation seeks to pull us away from that path just as it has from the very beginning. But if we stay true to the way of faith, we will shine like stars in the darkness of the world.

1. The lust of the flesh

- There are things in the world that entice us by appealing to our desires.
2. The lust of the eyes

- There are things in the world that entice us by appealing to eyes.
3. The pride of life

- There is a way of living that assumes we know best and seeks to assess even God’s ways by our own wisdom.
4. Love and trust lead to obedience

- If we love God and trust his character, we will want to do his will.
5. The subtle erosion of trust

- The enemy leads us to question God’s word and his character so that we abandon his will.

Genesis 3:1–5 (NIV)
Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”
The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ”
“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
Remember:

The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.
