Key Greek Words for Salvation
1.Sōtēria (σωτηρία) – “Salvation”
•Root of our English word “soteriology”
•Means deliverance, preservation, safety, salvation
•Refers to spiritual rescue from sin and its consequences
Romans 1:16 – The gospel… is the power of God unto salvation (sōtēria)
Hebrews 2:3 – How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?
2.Sōzō (σῴζω) – “To Save”
•Verb form: to deliver, rescue, heal, make whole
•Often used in the Gospels for physical healing and spiritual salvation
Luke 8:36 – The demoniac was healed and saved (sōzō)
Romans 10:9 – You shall be saved (sōzō)
This word connects salvation with healing, making it clear that salvation is holistic—body, soul, and spirit.
3.Aphesis (ἄφεσις) – “Release/Deliverance” or “Forgiveness”
•Literally means a letting go, release from bondage
•Often used for the forgiveness of sins
Luke 4:18 – “He has sent Me to proclaim release (aphesis) to the captives”
Ephesians 1:7 – “In Him we have redemption… the forgiveness (aphesis) of sins”
4.Rhyomai (ῥύομαι) – “To Rescue”
•Implies a dramatic, active rescue from danger
•Often used when God rescues from evil or enemies
Colossians 1:13 – “He rescued (rhyomai) us from the domain of darkness”
2 Timothy 4:18 – “The Lord will rescue (rhyomai) me from every evil deed”
A Comprehensive Definition of Salvation
Salvation is the total deliverance of the believer—spirit, soul, and body—from sin, Satan, and death, resulting in reconciliation to God, transformation of life, and eternal life in His kingdom.
It is the process of going:
•From darkness to light
•From bondage to liberty
•From condemnation to righteousness
•From death to life
Luke 4:16-21
Salvation is victory over Satan, and all evil forces concerning the life and destiny of the believer.
Complete deliverance for the believer in Jesus Christ is about establishing and manifesting victory over Satan and his forces rather than fighting for it. (Romans 8:37-39)
How is someone delivered?
John 8:31-36
According to Jesus, it is by knowing the truth. This means the greatest power of Satan is lies.
Truth = Freedom
Hosea 4:6
Deliverance is knowledge dependent.
The four stages of salvation.
Confessing Jesus as Lord (lost to saved, darkness to light.) (Romans 10:9-10; 2 Corinthians 5:17; 1 Peter 2:9)
Addressing the spiritual influences in your life that are at the root of a believers bondage. (2 Corinthians 10:3-5)
Transformation, by the renewing of the mind through worship and the word. (Romans 12:1-2; Ephesians 5:26) This engages your mind and understanding. (2 Corinthians 4:1-6)
Complete deliverance through discipline/victory over the flesh, sin, satan, and all evil. (Romans 8:1-17; Galatians 6:7-9)
Learn the things that keep us in bondage.
Sin Nature/Flesh - This is an soulish and self focused state of man.
Satanic influence. (Any evil influence)
a) Deception - believers and unbelievers can be deceived. (Galatians 3:1) Deception works like a spell (witchcraft).
b) Manipulation/Control - Strongholds - This is a system of thinking in our minds, that is reinforced by the presence/powers of the enemy.
c) Complete Possession - spirit/soul/body - This cannot happen to a saint of God.
Expose the access points of Satan and his forces. (Ephesians 4:27)
Strongholds are reinforced by spirit entities. Often the spirit entity backing the stronghold will carry the nature of the stronghold.
Ignorance. (2 Corinthians 2:11)
Disobedience - gives authority to the darkness.
Covenant/Altars - Legal access/system of authorization/generational.
Set up a secret place. This does not have to be anything elaborate, just a place, a time, and no distractions. (2 Kings 4:8-10)
(Psalm 91; Psalm 27:4-5; Psalm 31:19-20; Psalm 32:6-7; Matthew 6:5-6)
For some this requires the same time every day. But I want to bring some balance. My secret place time is SET, but it is not the same time each day. I did that for a while and was simply exhausted. However, this does not mean to sleep the day away and do it whenever you wake up. SET A TIME! DAILY! Here is my schedule on a normal week. Monday 6:30am, Tuesday 5:20am, Weds 5:20am, Thursday 6am, Friday 6am, Saturday 7am, Sunday 5:20am. I believe an hour is the ideal amount of time, but start with what you can and let it grow. Anything is better than nothing. If you miss a day, don’t beat yourself up, just get back on task immediately. If you oversleep, don’t beat yourself up, just give the amount of time you can with what you have left. THIS IS CRITCAL!
Your secret place should consist of three things. Time to pray, time to read the word, time to listen. The secret place is the greatest key to overcoming systems of thinking, altars, and the spiritual forces backing them.
GET RID OF THINGS in your life that cause you to sin. (Matthew 5:27-30) Books, TV Shows/Movies/Music, relationships, anything that steals your attention from your kingdom purpose! (Romans 14:23) Consecration is KEY. (Acts 19:18-20)
Surround yourself with people that will encourage you. Bloom, Foundations, Home Groups, Prayer cells are a great starting point to develop critical relationships. (Hebrews 10:23-25; 1 Corinthians 15:33; 2 Corinthians 6:14) Reference Deuteronomy 22:9-11
•4.Get involved with God’s people. Notice in Romans 12:1-2, the next step after consecration is SERVICE! When you are involved with the work of the church, there is not only accountability there, but the weight of dependability. It helps to know, people NEED YOU.
