Sermon: United at Pentecost
Questions:
1. Have you ever felt God’s presence in a profound way? What happened and what was it like?
2. What do you remember about each of the main points of the sermon seen above?
3. What stood out to you? Were you challenged in some ways? Do you have any questions to discuss?
4. Read Ezekiel 36:22-29 (written about 600 years before Jesus came)
a) What are the things that God promised to do in this prophecy? (Make a list)
b) Why did God say he would do these things?
c) Review Acts 2:1-12. Do you see any parallels between these passages?
5. Read Hebrews 8:1-13
a) Why did God replace the old covenant with the new covenant? Was the old covenant faulty?
b) What are some of the differences between the old covenant and the new covenant?
6. Read Colossians 2:16-17
a) Some teach that all Christians must observe the ancient Jewish festivals (such as Passover, Pentecost, Tabernacles, etc.). How does this passage of Scripture address this?
b) Can it be helpful to study these ancient festivals? If so, in what way?
7. Read Joel 2:28-32
a) Peter quotes this passage on the Day of Pentecost. What confusion was he addressing? (see Acts 2:13-16)
b) In what ways was the prophecy of Joel 2 fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost?
c) Do you think this prophecy was completely fulfilled?
d) Should we expect the supernatural gifts mentioned in Joel 2 and manifested at Pentecost to occur today? How does Acts 2:17 speak to this?
8. Read Joel 2:12-17
a) How is this passage connected to Joel 2:28-32?
b) Even though this had a specific fulfillment nearly 2000 years ago, what principles can we glean?
c) What do you think might happen if churches today took this message to heart and acted on it?
9. Read John 15:26. What is one of the Holy Spirit’s main roles?
10. Read John 16:7-15
a) Why do you think it was better for Jesus to leave? Is having the Holy Spirit with you better than having Jesus with you?
b) According to this passage, what else does the Holy Spirit do?
11. What do you think it would look like if the Holy Spirit were poured out in a mighty way on our church? Do you desire this, or does it scare you (or both)?
12. Pray together for any needs you have. Also, pray for more of the Holy Spirit in your lives and for a true outpouring of the Spirit in our church.
