Big Idea: A heart for God focuses on integrity over image and character over appearance.
I. Absalom’s Rebellious Conspiracy (vv. 1-6)
A. King David reconciled with his son, Absalom. But it’s a case of too little, too late, as it’s clear Absalom is still disgruntled and is sowing the seeds of rebellion against his father.
B. So how did Absalom “steal the hearts of the men of Israel?” (v. 6) Like an insincere politician he was shrewd and deceptive. We see:
1. He used his charm and flattered others (vv. 1, 5-6).
2. He played on people’s fears and discontent (vv. 2-3).
3. He made promises of better days under his leadership (vv. 4-5).
C. Absalom’s conspiracy reminds us why it is important to confront sin and seek reconciliation before it’s too late (cf. Matt. 18:15-20; 1 Cor. 13:6). David earned the loyalty of the people through faithful service and sacrifice, but Absalom won their hearts through a hollow image and empty promises.
II. Absalom’s Rebellious Heart (vv. 7-12)
A. While David should have taken a more direct approach in confronting his son, the fact is that Absalom’s behavior also reveals an uncomfortable truth about the human heart—that we are often rebellious and seek our own way contrary to God and His Word (cf. Jer. 17:9-10; Matt. 15:17-20).
A. Absalom’s behavior exhibited warning signs that should have been recognized. We see in Absalom:
1. Arrogance (cf. Prov. 11:2; 16:5, 18; Js. 4:6) – Absalom was full of himself, and he lacked humility.
2. Rebelliousness (cf. 1 Sam. 15:23; Ps. 68:6) – Absalom’s treasonous behavior was rooted in his selfish desires.
3. Immorality – Absalom had his brother, Amnon, killed and nowhere do we see any hint of repentance.
4. Divisiveness (cf. Rom. 16:17-18) – Absalom is sowing the seeds of division among the people.
C. A lesson we can learn from Absalom’s example is the importance of being a people that focus on integrity over image and character over appearance.
