Wisdom comes from God / We Must Treasure & Hold Onto His Words / Beware of Distractions
Proverbs 4:11 I am teaching you the way of wisdom; I am guiding you on straight paths. 12 When you walk, your steps will not be hindered; when you run, you will not stumble. 13 Hold on to instruction; don't let go. Guard it, for it is your life… 20 My son, pay attention to my words; listen closely to my sayings. 21 Don't lose sight of them; keep them within your heart. 22 For they are life to those who find them, and health to one's whole body. 23 Guard your heart above all else, for it is the source of life… 25 Let your eyes look forward; fix your gaze straight ahead. 26 Carefully consider the path for your feet, and all your ways will be established. 27 Don't turn to the right or to the left; keep your feet away from evil.
Matthew 7:13 "Enter through the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the road is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who go through it. 14 How narrow is the gate and difficult the road that leads to life, and few find it.
A Well-known Distracted Worshiper / When Service Gets in the Way of Worship
Luke 10:38 While they were traveling, He entered a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. 39 She had a sister named Mary, who also sat at the Lord's feet (in a submissive posture of reverence and worship) and was listening to what He said (taking in the words and the wisdom of God). 40 But Martha was distracted by her many tasks (of service), and she came up and asked, "Lord, don't You care that my sister has left me to serve alone? So tell her to give me a hand." 41 The Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has made the right choice, and it will not be taken away from her."
The Stuff of Life Can Hinder Worship
Matthew 6:24 "No one can be a slave of two masters, since either he will hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot be slaves of God and of money (“mammon” – riches, personal wealth or resources, as opposed to trusting and having faith in God and His protection and provision).
Exodus 23:25aWorship the LORD (Yahweh) your God, and He will bless your bread and your water (He will be your provision)…
Mark 10:23Jesus looked around and said to His disciples, "How hard it is for those who have wealth (“chrema” – riches, possessions or money) to enter the kingdom of God!"… 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God." 27b… "With men it is impossible, but not with God, because all things are possible with God."
Worry Can Be a Distraction / Learn to Wait Upon & Trust in the LORD
Matthew 6:25 "This is why I tell you: Don't worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn't life more than food and the body more than clothing? … 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you. 34 Therefore don't worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Psalm 40:1 I waited patiently for the LORD, and He turned to me and heard my cry for help. 2 He brought me up from a desolate pit, out of the muddy clay, and set my feet on a rock, making my steps secure. 3 He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the LORD. 4 How happy is the man who has put his trust in the LORD and has not turned to the proud or to those who run after lies!
Relationship with Christ is Key / Allow Him to Transform Weakness to Strength
Philippians 3:10 My goal is to know Him and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, 11 assuming that I will somehow reach the resurrection from among the dead. 12 Not that I have already reached the goal or am already fully mature, but I make every effort to take hold of it because I also have been taken hold of by Christ Jesus… 21 He will transform the body of our humble condition into the likeness of His glorious body, by the power that enables Him to subject everything to Himself.
Rejoice in All Things / Concentrate & Dwell on His Goodness / Peace & Grace Follow
Philippians 4:1 So then, my brothers, you are dearly loved and longed for-- my joy and crown. In this manner stand firm in the Lord, dear friends… 4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! … 6 Don't worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses every thought, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable-- if there is any moral excellence and if there is any praise-- dwell on these things. 9 Do what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you… 23 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.
Hindrances & Sin Must Be Dealt with Intentionally in Worship / It’s a Sacrifice
Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every weight (hindrance/distraction) and the sin that so easily ensnares us. Let us run with endurance the race that lies before us, 2 keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that lay before Him endured a cross and despised the shame and has sat down at the right hand of God's throne. 3 For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, so that you won't grow weary and lose heart.
Romans 12:1 Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship.
