We can begin to fulfill the Great Commission by first obeying the
Great Commandment.
I. Know the Message (Matt. 28:16-20)
A. We can better share our faith when we are familiar with the
Gospel message. The word “Gospel” means “Good News.” In
simple terms, this is the message that Jesus Christ died for our
sins and was raised from the dead, offering eternal life to all
who believe in Him (cf. 1 Cor. 15:1-4).
B. In Jesus’s commission to His disciples, we see:
1. A great affirmation (v. 18; cf. Phil. 2:9-11) – The Great Commission flows from this truth: Jesus is Lord of all.
2. A great invitation (v. 19; cf. Rev. 7:9-10) – Jesus’s
invitation is to all peoples, both far and near.
3. A great promise (v. 20) – Jesus’s promise is that He will be
with us always. He will never abandon or forsake us.
C. As we live out our faith in Jesus, in both word and deed, it is
important to remember that the power of the Gospel lies not in
us, but in the authority of Jesus and His power (cf. 1 Cor. 2:1-5).
II. Know Your Call (Matt. 22:34-40)
A. The thought of evangelism frightens some people, but it doesn’t
need to. Not everyone has the gift of evangelism (cf. Eph. 4:11-
12). But all of us are all called to be ready to share with others
the hope we have in Messiah Jesus (cf. 1 Pet. 3:15-16).
B. How do we start? We can start with the Great Commandment
(cf. Matt. 22:34-40):
1. To love our God with every part of our being.
2. To love our neighbor as ourselves.
C. We can probably find numerous reasons to complain about the
world in which we live. But how does God see the people of our
communities? God sees the people and their need for the Gospel
of Jesus Christ. When we take the time and initiative to get to
know our neighbors and those in our community, then we will
have greater opportunities to let our light shine for God’s glory
(cf. Matt. 5:13-16).
