https://www.centralmethodist.com/connectioncardIt is more important to do church or to be the church? During this Practicing Christian series we are looking at how we can be the church, for our community and for ourselves.
Be a witness is sometimes seen as a scary act. It has been said the Christian faith is the greatest story ever told but how do we tell the story in a world with some many distractions and often seems disinterested?
There are two primary reasons we are reluctant to share the hope we have:
1) Insensitivity - Some Christians share their faith in a way that might seem to cause harm and we do not want to be that kind of person.
2) Fear - Generally people avoid talking about politics or religion. We sometimes do not share our Fatih because of a fear of being rejected.
There is a lot at stake. In John 14:6 Jesus said he is the way the truth and the life. Not only are people's eternal destinies at stake, we believe walking with Jesus and following his teachings are actually a better way to live. We are called to share our faith.
In Matthew 5:13-16, Jesus says we are salt and light. Salt was not only for taste but for preserving meat. Light is a good thing to show people where to go. Jesus called us to let our light shine, where we work, play, and live.
How do we Witness?
1) Your Character - The way you live in the world matters. Being a person of integrity will make you stand out in a world where it is sometimes hard to find.
2) Your Deeds - People kind, being generous, listening to people, serving shows that life is not all about you. If you live for others, people will notice.
3) Your Words - Words matter. A witness simply testifies on behalf of something they have seen or experienced. We are called so share that Christ has done for us and in our lives with gentleness and respect.
What is the gospel we proclaim?
What does salvation mean? The word salvation in the greek is a broad terms which means to save, to heal, to rescue, to deliver, to make whole.
Salvation for many only means that Jesus came to die on the cross to deal with our sin problem so that we can be with him in heaven when we die. Salvation includes all of that but he is also interested in healing the brokenness of sin in our lives. Salvation is also about having your soul healed from your woundedness from life and your own efforts at living which can cause damage to our souls.
When we share how God has touched our lives by Jesus and how he is working in our lives, people are attracted to sharing our story.
God can use someone like me
The reason most of us have encountered Jesus is because someone told us about him. It may have been a parent, family member, friend, teacher, etc. God chooses to use broken people to share with other broken people so they might find healing and wholeness.
Let us renew our commitment to witness to the power of Jesus Christ!
