Big Idea: There is a great cost in rejecting God’s kindness.
I. A Kindness Rejected (vv. 1-6)
A. When the Ammonite king, Nahash, dies, David sends a delegation to his son, Hanun, to express his condolences. However, unlike Mephibosheth, Hanun rejects David’s kindness and insults his messengers. This foolish move incurs David’s anger and threatens the alliance between the two nations.
B. In rejecting David’s kindness, we see:
1. Poor advice (v. 3; cf. 1 Cor. 15:33-34) – Hanun’s princes gave him poor advice. What’s worse, he listened to them.
2. Poor assumptions (v. 3) – In their arrogance, Hanun and his princes misjudged David’s motives.
3. Poor response (v. 6) – When they recognized their error, rather than repent, they doubled-down on their foolishness.
C. When offered kindness, our best response is to reject pride and accept the generous and gracious gift. This is especially true when it is God offering the kindness (cf. Mk. 10:17-22).
II. The Cost of Rejection (vv. 7-19)
A. David wasn’t looking for a fight, but when his kindness was rejected and Hanun persisted by amassing troops for war, David was forced to defend his people and the honor of the Lord. This would prove disastrous for Hanun and his allies.
B. In the cost of rejection, we see:
1. There is a cost to pride and obstinance (vv. 15-19; cf. Prov. 16:18; Js. 4:6-7) – Hanun paid a high price for his pride.
2. There is a blessing to trusting in God (vv. 9-14) – Though outnumbered, God was with Joab and his forces.
3. There is a cost to rejecting God’s grace and kindness (cf. Heb. 2:1-4; Rom. 2:4-5; 1 Jn. 1:5-9).
C. Practically speaking, this chapter also reminds us of the need for persistence in walking daily with the Lord. David seeks to do what is right in God’s eyes, but he will soon face tremendous temptation and challenges that will require a new level of humility and faith.
