Big Idea: Even when things do go as expected, we can trust that God sees the larger picture and His sovereign plan is one that offers a hope and a future.
I. An Unexpected Response (2 Sam. 7:4-7)
A. Now that Jerusalem is the political and spiritual capital of Israel and David has rest from his enemies, he wants to build a temple for the Lord to house the Ark. But God says no. Why?
1. A tent was sufficient for the time being (v. 6).
2. God hadn’t asked for a temple (v. 7).
3. As a man of war, David was not the right person to build the Lord’s temple (cf. 1 Chr. 22:6-10).
B. David’s desire to build the temple was not wrong, it’s simply that he was not the person to do it. God had something else in mind. When God says no to your idea, trust His sovereign plan and that He has something better in store (cf. Acts 16:6-10)
II. A Prayer of Praise (vv. 18-29)
A. David’s reaction to God’s Word as spoken by Nathan the prophet is instructive and encouraging. Rather than sulk or be downcast by God’s no, David responds with praise and worship. We see David:
1. Praising God for His presence (vv. 18-20; cf. Ps. 23:4) – David is humbled by God’s mercy toward him and his descendants.
2. Praising God for His provision (vv. 21-22; cf. Ps. 23:5) – David is humbled by God’s care and provision toward him and Israel, which sees them through challenging times.
3. Praising God for His promises (vv. 25-29; Rom. 1:1-4) – David is humbled by God’s grace that has brought him and his house to this point and given them—and us—a future.
B. Things may not have turned out exactly as David planned, but rather than be disappointed, David reflected on God’s promises and praised Him for His sovereign grace and mercy. Even when things don’t go our way, we, too, can offer a prayer of praise to God for the gift of Messiah Jesus and the fulfilment of His promises.
