A Definition of Encouragement
To ''encourage,'' literally means to put courage into someone.
"You know it can be discouraging in this world.," because the world is not for you, the world is against you. The Scripture says, "In the last days difficult times will come,” (2 Timothy 3:2). Jesus Christ was the most encouraging person to ever live.
The Greek word 'Paraclete' can be used several different ways:
- Exhort
- Encourage
- Comfort
- Console
- Beseech
- Entreat
It’s what you give in a relationship that matters, not what you get from a relationship.
- Jonathan gave: he stripped himself of the robe, and was willing to give up the throne. He was in the position to be the king.
- He gave his garments and even his sword (there were not many swords in Israel). He was telling David, "You're the guy."
- He gave:
1. His Position
2. His Prominence
3. His Possessions
- What we can give to encourage others:
1. Ear: The best way to encourage someone is to listen to them.
2. Earnings: It's going to cost you something to encourage others.
3. Experience: Many have gone through difficult things (2 Corinthians 1:3).
- How to give these:
1. Excellent: in what you do.
2. Enthusiastic: It's better not to give than to give the wrong way.
3. Enrich: The early church gave of their possessions (Acts 4:33-38).
II. Believe
What They Can Become
- We need to see what someone can become, not just what they are now.
- Parents believe in what their children will become.
- Prerequisites - we must see people not where they are, but what they will be.
- In Luke 5:18, men bring the paralyzed man to Christ.
III. Scriptures
The COmfort of Scriptures
- It’s more about the scripture then it is about sympathy.
- The comfort of scripture - 1 Corinthians 15 says to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
- Hurt and pain are guaranteed in this world. Jesus tells us that we will have trouble, but we can take heart because He has overcome the world! (John 16:33)
- Paul is saying, "I am going through some things right now, but let me tell you why I’m suffering: I’m going through this right now so I can help others."
- We should be encouraged by watching others be encouraged (Deuteronomy 13:8).
- It is well with my soul.
