The Greatest Commandment

What is it? Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.

Starting with our HEART. This means that we willfully choose to allow our core affections, treasures, and desires to be formed and directed by the love of God.This will in turn affect the motives behind why we do what we do both for God and for others.

The kind of love we are commanded to have for God should also involve our SOUL. Which means that we willfully choose to allow our might, passion, or energy for God to be formed by the love of God.This will in turn affect our excitement and power for God - especially when it comes to living for and serving him. Finally, the kind of love we are commanded to have for God should involve our MIND.Which means that we willfully choose to allow our belief system, thinking patterns, and the way we see ourselves, to all be formed and directed by the love of God.
The Second Greatest Commandment

What is it? Love your neighbor as yourself. This love that Jesus says his followers should have for their neighbors is the same love that he says we should have for God. Agape love - a love of the will that is purposeful and intentional.

Jesus is NOT teaching us that we need to learn to love ourselves, but instead is ASSUMING that we already do. (We feed ourselves and try to make ourselves happy and comfortable.)

In light of that then, to love our neighbors as ourselves means that we will choose to purposefully and intentionally look out for the physical, emotional, and spiritual welfare of those around us.
Key Thought

Proper "neighboring" cannot be done without obedience to the first commandment, to love God with all of our heart, soul, and mind.
