BOTTOM LINE: What does love require of me?
1. Love like I have never loved before.
2. Love requires commitment to community.
3. Love like Jesus.
4. Love ripples far beyond what I could imagine.
START TALKING

What is something that you have done or experienced that was unlike anything you had done before? Maybe you thought you knew what work was until this? Or you thought you knew what pain, fun, study, cleaning, etc. was? How was this unlike anything you had experienced with that before?
START THINKING

Read John 13:34-35. Why do you think Jesus said this is a new command? Why was it important that he clarified this is a new command and not an additional command? What is new about this command from previous commands about love?

Read Romans 12:10, 1 Corinthians 12:25, Galatians 5:13, and Colossians 3:13. These are just four of more than 20 "one another" passages in the new testament letters that would be written after what Jesus said in John 13:34-35. How do you see the New Testament church and followers of Jesus living out this new command from these passages (and others you may think of!)?
START SHARING

When have you experienced receiving love from someone that was a new kind of love like you had never experienced before? What was it about how they showed this Jesus-following love - not how they felt love - that impacted you?

When have you shown that love to someone, and it maybe even surprised you that you had the strength to be that forgiving, gracious, generous, patient, or kind?

How have you seen that this kind of love requires commitment to community? Is it possible to love like this, both in giving it and receiving it, without being committed to community?
START DOING

When you think about Jesus saying, "As I have loved you, love one another," what examples come to mind of how he loved? (Read Luke 23:34, John 8:9-11, and Matthew 14:30-32 for some examples - or others that come to mind!) Now what are some ways that you can love others in the way that Jesus loved them? What might it require you to do that will be difficult or challenging because you have never had to love like that before?

Read John 13:35. Who is the "everyone" in your life that will know you are following Jesus IF you love like this? Who will those ripples impact far beyond what you can imagine?

What is a decision you are facing or an uncertainty in your life that you need to ask this question to help determine what to do next? What do you sense the Holy Spirit telling you to do?
START PRAYING

Pray for each person's decision or situation that they gave in the last question. Pray that each of us choose to do what love would require of us in those moments so that EVERYONE will know that you are disciples and followers of Jesus, and that the impact will ripple far beyond what you can imagine.
