In this sermon series, we will be looking at a literary device in the Gospel of Mark called a "Markan Sandwich." At a few points in this gospel, Mark will take two stories and put them together. II. Second Story

III. What's Mark's point?

IV. Following Jesus

1. Reflect on when you first started following Jesus. When was it? How did you start?

2. Reflect on the time since. What has happened since you followed Jesus? How has God been faithful in that time?

3. Offer prayers of thanks for God's faithfulness over time in your life.

1. Jesus gives his followers specific instructions when he sends them out. What is the significance of these instructions? Why does Jesus send them out with these instructions?

2. Why does Mark follow up these instructions with the story of John the Baptist's beheading?

3. What stands out to you about the story of John the Baptist's beheading?

4. What is Mark teaching us by combining these two stories?

5. How does this section of the Gospel of Mark change your perception of what it means to follow Jesus?
