1. The cross was a place of pain & punishment

Pilate authorized the:

• Scourging of Jesus (19:1)

• Mocking of Jesus (19:2-5)

• Crucifying of Jesus (19:17-18)

- He died a sinless death

- He died a substitute death

The essence of sin is we human beings substituting ourselves for God, while the essence of salvation is God substituting himself for us. We put ourselves where only God deserves to be; God puts himself where we deserve to be.

2. The cross was a place of purpose & power

What was “finished” at the cross?

For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us,

that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

(2 Corinthians 5:21)

• God did something through Christ

You were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold . . . but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. (1 Peter1:18-19)

I hear the Savior say,

"Thy strength indeed is small,

Child of weakness, watch and pray,

Find in Me thine all in all."

Jesus paid it all,

All to Him I owe;

Sin had left a crimson stain,

He washed it white as snow.
