This Week's Bulletin

Jesus was courageous.

He was in no way fearful of or anxious about the opposition and threat of Herod. He was courageous in the face of opposition.
There is some bad news that has to be delivered when sharing the gospel.

1) They(and we) are a sinner - which is something that not everyone likes to be called, because they think of themselves as an overall good person.
2) Because of their sin, they are an enemy of God’s, separated from him, and deserving of his just wrath against our sin - which again is something that not everyone likes to hear.
3) There isn’t anything that a sinner can do to change their enemy status before God - their good works won’t change anything, and that is not a pleasant thing to hear.

If we are going to be serious about sharing the gospel with others, which we are called to do, the question we need to be asking ourselves is not if we are going to face opposition, but rather how are we going to respond when we face it?
Jesus shared truth.

Jesus lets them know that his desire for them is to save and protect them like a mother hen tries to shelter and protect her chicks from danger. And what Jesus desires to save and protect them from is the divine judgment of a holy God against their sin. Unfortunately, while this was his desire, Jesus goes on to share with them some confrontational truth.
Jesus had courage amidst rejection.

While saddened by the rejection of people, Jesus still had the courage to speak truth to them. This is an important lesson for us to keep in mind. Some of us aren’t consistently and effectively sharing the message that God saves with others, because we are afraid that they will reject the confrontational truth that the message contains. Have courage!
This courage is something that saved people are given as a gift as a result of…

1) Being forgiven and made righteous before God.
"The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion" (Proverbs 28:1).
2) The Indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
“Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4)
3) God's promises to trust and hope in.
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
4) The assurance of God's sovereignty in our lives.
“Be of good courage, and let us be courageous for our people, and for the cities of our God, and may the Lord do what seems good to him.”
5) The 24/7 access we have to God, through prayer.
“On the day I called, you answered me; my strength of soul you increased.” (Psalm 138:3)
