Thanksgiving – Hope
Luke 15
Mission Statement
Vision Statement
Advent begins with a cry for help . . . and the glimmer of Hope.
Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him. And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.”
Luke 15:1-2
Sin is anything that gets you lost from God. Jesus’ point is that God is most interested in finding the lost, even those lost in illusions of being righteous.
And Jesus said, “There was a man who had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided his property between them.
Luke 15:11-12

“But when he came to himself . . .”
“Repentance means learning to say Abba again.”
-Joachim Jeremias
When it comes to the grace of the Father, there’s no deal to be made. There’s just grace.
“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him . . . “
Luke 15:20a
But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’
Luke 15:20-21

But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate.
Luke 15:22-23
For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.
Luke 15:24
It’s not the Father who is lost or hidden. It’s we who have the talent for hiding—and the function of all hiding is to keep you out of the Father’s arms.
To be clear, choosing to enter the community of restored relationships with the Father does not mean that you have to give up believing you are right. It just means that you have to stop worshipping it.
By the end of the story, the only important thing is to get into the Father’s arms. That’s the only thing that can make you joyful. According to Jesus, it’s the only thing that can make heaven rejoice.
What the light of the world means is that heaven has broken into this dark place. But God didn’t drop down more instructions or laws. What God was giving us is God. To free you, in Jesus, from chasing the meaningless things that have become our priorities and pursuits and reclaim you to a kingdom which will outlast eternity. Today is a good day to get honest and begin that journey. Amen.

"Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it."Malachi 3:10
