If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus...

- 1 Timothy 4:6
If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, nourished on the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed. Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance. That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe.

Why be a Good Servant:

Our hope is in Christ’s salvation he desires for all people in this life and the life to come.

How to be a Good Servant:

•Point out destructive lies
•Nourish on life-giving truth
•Labor, strive, and train in godliness
We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?
Romans 6:2

count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.
Romans 6:11-12
His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life… For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith…

- 2 Peter 1:3, 5a
My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin…

1 John 2:1
My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.

1 John 2:1
“The path of spiritual growth in the riches of Christ is not a passive one. Grace is not opposed to effort. It is opposed to earning. Effort is action. Earning is attitude. You have never seen people more active than those who have been set on fire by the grace of God.”

- Dallas Willard
Command and teach these things. Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you. Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

- 1 Timothy 4:11-16
What a Good Servant Does:

1. Command / Teach – Timothy was to authoritatively impart the truths of scripture to his hearers.

2. Don’t Let / Set – Timothy was to offset his lack in years with abundance in godliness.

3. Devote / Don’t Neglect – Timothy was to focus his efforts on his specific calling as a pastor and exercise his teaching gift to bless others.

4. Be / Give – Timothy was to view his entire life as work done to advance the gospel so others may see.

5. Watch / Persevere – Timothy was to regularly examine his life and doctrine until his race was finished.

…because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

- 1 Timothy 4:16
The result of Timothy being a good servant was confirmed salvation for himself and his followers.
What would happen if you lived as a good servant?
