“Series: Home Construction. Part 2 - “FRAMING IT IN”
(The Role of the Husband - Building a Biblical Framework for Marriage and the Home)
1 Peter 3:7 - “Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.” ESV. four main principles
1. LIVE WITH YOUR WIFE IN AN UNDERSTANDING WAY.
1 Peter 3:7a - “Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way…"
“Likewise” - similarly; root word - similar in appearance, character or manner. “husbands” - Greek “aner” means an individual man. “live with” - dwell with; to reside together as a family. “in an understanding way” - according to; down in place or time / knowing, the act of knowing, knowledge, science; root - to know absolutely.
(Wives -1 Peter 3:1ff)
(Christians to government - 1 Peter 2:13-15)Slaves to masters - 1 Peter 2:14-20)
(1 Peter 2:21-23 - “For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.” ESV)
2. HONOR YOUR WIFE.
1 Peter 3:7b - “…showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel,…" ESV
“showing/giving” - to apportion; to bestow. “honor” - a value; money paid; valuables; esteem of the highest degree; dignity; root word - to pay a price. “wife” - feminine; root word - a woman. “as the weaker vessel” - strengthless / a vessel; implement; equipment; figuratively for a wife contributing to the usefulness of her husband.
Ephesians 5:25-33 - 25“Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her, 26 that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that He might present the church to Himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. 28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of His body. 31 "Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh." 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. 33 However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. ESV.
3. RECOGNIZE YOU ARE JOINT HEIRS WITH YOUR WIFE.
1 Peter 3:7c - “…since they are heirs with you of the grace of life,…” ESV
“Since” - which as, in the manner. “they are heirs together with you” - co-heir, participant in common; root compound words - union, with, together, companionship, possession / sense of apportioning; sharer by allotment; inheritor. “of the grace of life” - graciousness; manner of the act; the Divine influence upon heart and it’s reflection upon life; including gratitude; root word - to be calmly happy or cheerful / life; life to it’s fullest; even eternal life…God’s type of life.
4. HAVE UNHINDERED PRAYERS!
1 Peter 3:7d - “…so that your prayers may not be hindered.” ESV
“so that” - to the point reached. “your prayers” - concerning you / prayer; worship; oratory in a chapel; root word - to pray to God; supplicate; worship God; a preposition of direction; toward (God). “may not be hindered” - qualified negative (not absolute negative) / frustrated; cut down; root word - to chop or beat the breast in grief.
1 Peter 3:7 - “Likewise, husbands, (like Jesus) live with your wives in an understanding way, (dwell with, reside with our wife in an understanding way…according to knowledge…especially according to God’s knowledge) showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, (offering honor…giving honor…bestowing honor upon the wife like a prized possession…loving the wife like Christ sacrificially loved the church) since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, (recognizing we…as Christian husbands and wives…are in this together…living out this gracious gift called life and eternal life) so that your prayers may not be hindered.” (Oh how we as Christian men need an opened line to the very throne room of God…Amen???)ESV.
