I. LEAN ON COMMUNITY RELATIONSHIPS (v.12)
a. They are vital for ministry
v.12 – “When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you, do your best to come to me at Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there.”
1. Titus (Gal. 2:3; 2 Cor. 8:23)
2. Artemas
3. Tychicus (Acts 20:4; Eph. 6:21; Col. 4:7)
“Fellow servant,” Gk. σύνδουλος (syndoulos)
Compound word: σύν (union) + δοῦλος (“slave”) = “a fellow slave of the same master”
b. They are vital for accountability
c. They are vital for spiritual growth
Proverbs 27:17 – “Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.”
II. LEVERAGE COMMUNITY RESOURCES
Three Kinds of Resources
a. Support
v.13 – “Do your best to speed Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their way; see that they lack nothing.”
1. Support for missionaries
2. Support for churches
3. Support for families
b. Skillsets
v.13 – “Zenas the Lawyer”
Col. 4:14 – “Luke the beloved doctor”
Rom. 16:23 – “Erastus the city treasurer”
c. Service
v.14 – “And let our people learn to devote themselves to good works, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not be unfruitful.”
III. LINK COMMUNITY TO OTHER COMMUNITIES
v.15 – “All who are with me send greetings to you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all.”
Five Takeaways from Titus:
1. If the local church is not unified around sound doctrine, it will never make an impact on the world.
2. If we are going to fight for biblical values, we better also live by them.
3. The only remedy against injustice in the world is the Gospel.
4. Remember that the people you most vehemently disagree with are no different from you apart from the grace of God.
5. Don’t engage in the Culture War alone.
