Describe a time you were filled with wonder and awe. How often does this happen for you?
Begin your study with prayer
Pause for a few minutes to quiet your heart and mind. Then ask God for insight and direction as you study and reflect on this week’s lesson.
Bible Study and Group Discussion
Read John 12:1-11.
1. Passover was a celebration designed to unite the people of God. In this scene, however, those who had spent the most time with Jesus were anything but unified. Name the characters and briefly describe them.
2. A woman letting her hair down in public would have been a significant act of defiance against social norms. How much do you think or care about other people’s reactions to your faith? Explain.
3. The perfume Mary poured over Jesus’ feet was very expensive (worth a year’s wages). This could be described as an over-the-top demonstration of absolute devotion. Have you ever felt that way toward Jesus? Describe.
4. The fact that the house was filled with the fragrance suggests that this was not only an act of love, but also that the fragrance of the act would extend far beyond the event itself (compare with Matthew 26:6-13). What person or church community has had a lasting, positive impact on you? How are you different because of their devotion to Christ?
5. Judas appeared to care for the poor, but his motives were far from honorable. Describe a time your motives didn’t match your actions.
6. Jesus responded to Judas saying, “You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have Me.” What point was He trying to make?
7. How was Mary’s act of worship preparation for His burial (vs. 7-8)?
8. Why did the chief priests begin planning to kill Lazarus too (vs. 9-11)?
9. Where are you in this story? Which character or group of people do you most identify with and why?
Spiritual Practice
A spiritual practice is something we can do to help us live in and enjoy God’s grace. We hope these practices will become a regular part of your life so that walking and talking with God is the most natural thing you do.

Identify the place you most effortlessly connect with God. Is it nature? Listening to music? Praying with others? A quiet walk? Meditating on Scripture? Go to that place. Spend enough time that daily obligations and responsibilities lose their grip. Talk with God about the joy you receive there.
Memory Verse
“For God is Spirit, so those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.” John 4:24 (NLT)
