If Anyone Among You Wanders
James 5:19-20 ESV
Early Warning Signs of Wandering:
1. A heart marked by entitlement rather than gratitude
2. A heart marked by bitterness rather than mercy
3. A life of isolation rather than communion
4. A focus on spiritual consumption rather than spiritual worship
1) Salvation is by grace alone through faith in Christ alone.
Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
2) Those who are saved by grace today will be saved by grace in eternity.
Romans 8:30
Those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.
3) Those who will be saved by grace in eternity must continue in the faith.
Colossians 1:21-23
And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you heard…
4) God himself will keep his children from fully and finally wandering away.
Philippians 1:6
I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 1:5…who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
5) God uses his people to keep his people.
James 5:19-20
My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.
What Does This Mean For Us?
1. We must learn to treasure the blessing of a rebuke
2. We must commit ourselves to relationships with one another in which we are fully known
3. We must praise God for the gracious kindness by which he keeps us from wandering finally away
