Father’s Day is a day of mixed emotions for many. For some of us, we had great fathers who loved us well. For others, dad wasn’t around, or maybe he was but was distant and never gave the kind of love and support you craved. For those of us who are fathers of older kids or adults, we might have some regrets about missed opportunities or failures in our own fatherhood. If we have young kids we might feel the tremendous weight of trying to lead our families well and not sure if we have what it takes.
Regardless of where you find yourself on this Father’s day, I want to direct your attention to Psalm 112 that gives some insight into the qualities and consequences of Godly manhood.
Psalm 112:1-10 ESV
1. He Fears the Lord and Delights in His Commands

3. He Deals Generously, Conducts His Affairs with Justice
He is Just

- It is well with him
4. He is Righteous (Upright)
For the righteous will never be moved; he will be remembered forever. He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the LORD. His heart is steady; he will not be afraid, until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.
A. Upright
Hebrew yāšar = to be right, be straight, be level, be upright, be just, be lawful, be smooth
B. Righteous
Hebrew Righteous ṣadîq = just, lawful, righteous

- He Will Be Remembered (legacy)
- He is not afraid of bad news; his heart is firm, trusting in the LORD.
- His heart is steady; he will not be afraid, until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.
5. He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor
He is Generous
He has distributed freely; he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever; his horn is exalted in honor.

Results
- His Righteousness Endures Forever
- His Horn is Exalted in Honor
This metaphor of the “exalted horn” comes from an image of a bull lifting up its horns after winning a battle. The raised horn is a common biblical symbol of victory, especially of being rescued from oppression.

6. The Wicked
The wicked man sees it and is angry; he gnashes his teeth and melts away; the desire of the wicked will perish!
Discussion Questions - Re-read our main passage from this week (Psalm 112) and then with your Growth Group, family, friends, etc. thoughtfully answer the following:
1. To the degree you’re comfortable sharing, what was your experience with your father?
2. How does your view of fatherhood influence your view of God?
3. How does Psalm 112 challenge you to develop relationships with others?
4. Which of the qualities of a godly man shown in Psalm 112 would you consider to be a gift of service towards others? Of these, which one can you become better at?
5. When the psalmist says “he will be remembered forever” he is speaking of a legacy. What one thing would you want your children (or others you care about) to remember you for?
6. How is living to create a legacy related to discovering your calling from God?
7. What specific Next Step do you want to take from this message?
