Sermon: Keys to Spiritual Victory
(Phone apps are good for comparing multiple translations. Study Bibles help with interpretation.)
1. Icebreaker question: Have you ever found yourself in the middle of an intense spiritual battle? What was it like? What happened?
2. The sermon focused on having victory in spiritual battle. What do you remember about each of the main points? What stood out to you or impacted you?
3. Read Luke 22:31-34
a) What did Jesus predict Simon Peter would do? (v. 34)
b) Who was going to be behind Peter’s terrible temptation and struggle?
c) What encouragement did Jesus offer Peter?
d) What mission did he give him for after his trial was over?
e) Now read Romans 8:34. How can this verse be encouraging when we are going through our own spiritual battles?
4. Read 2 Corinthians 12:7-10. In this passage, Paul discusses an affliction he was dealing with. We are not sure exactly what this “thorn” was, but hints from the context and language point to it possibly being opposition and slander from one or more people.
a) Whom does Paul say his “thorn” was a messenger of?
b) For what good reason was the thorn given to Paul?
c) How could something be both from Satan and from God? (see Genesis 50:20 and Romans 8:28)
d) How did Paul first try to deal with this affliction?
e) How did God answer Paul’s prayer?
f) What attitude did Paul adopt concerning his affliction?
g) What struggle in your own life is like a thorn to you? How might God be using it for good?
5. Read 1 Peter 5:8-9
a) What does the passage teach us about the devil?
b) What steps can we take to overcome his attacks?
c) How does it help to know that other believers are dealing with the same battles?
6. Spend some time in prayer. Ask God to give you faith and power in the midst of spiritual battle. Pray for each other regarding this and any other needs.
