STEP IT UP!
FAITH FORWARD >> — Message #8

In this final section of the book of James, we are reminded that we are a community—a community of faith! As such, we must never live out our faith in isolation. Rather, we are to care for one another. And so, James calls us to STEP IT UP when it comes to our practice of praying for and trusting God for the needs of others.
13 Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. 17 Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. 18 Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.
James 5:13-18 (NIV)
If we are going to respond to God’s call and be victors and overcomes — then we must commit to:
1. CONTINUALLY DEPEND UPON GOD.
Good, bad, or indifferent…if you’re going through trouble (of any sort), the answer to life’s issues is to PRAY! It’s to CONTINUALLY DEPEND UPON GOD!
one of the distinguishingmarks of maturity in our lives. May we be known by our consistency in God’spresence.
And the second thing that James says here — is that we must commit to:
2. ALWAYS TRAVEL WITH OTHERS!
James continues to speak about a God-ward, God-dependent life when he tells us that our faith should be shared with God’s people.
DON’T SUFFER IN SILENCE—OR IN SOLITUDE! He’s saying, “STEP IT UP!” Exercise your faith and welcome the ministry of your brothers and sisters in faith!
The practice of genuine prayer is best done in the context of community!
And the last thing that James says here — is that we must commit to:
3. RELENTLESSLY PRAY WITH FAITH!
Faith is the undercurrent of everything we do as followers of Jesus.
Make no mistake about it — the power in our prayers is not found in us — but rather in our great God.
When we pray in faith, we can be certain that:
- Power in our prayers is possible.
- Divine healing is available.
- And forgiveness is promised.
And so, the primary message of this passage is clear and direct — DON’T DARE TO DO FAITH ALONE! Commit to giving every moment of your life to Christ. Trust Him with you good days and your bad. And commit to giving yourself in relationship to others (DON’T TRAVEL ALONE). And bathe it all in prayer — faith-filled prayers that believe God to be able to answer your greatest need.
Commit to pray. Pray powerful prayers. And when you pray — trust God to supply your every need.
