OPENING QUESTION/DISCUSSION:

How good are you at sticking to New Year's resolutions?

What is one food that tempts you the most--that you cannot resist?
*CALL TO WORSHIP
When we are tempted to put others down:
Help us to overcome evil with good.
When we long to pass on the latest piece of gossip:
Help us to overcome evil with good.
When we want to push others away:
Help us to overcome evil with good.
When we are invited to nurture negative attitudes:
Help us to overcome evil with good.
When cynicism is the easy option:
Help us to overcome evil with good.
And when we hear your gentle voice calling us towards love:
Help us to listen and respond.
The light shines in the darkness!
And the darkness did not overcome it!

*HYMN: "I Need Thee Every Hour" #397

I need thee every hour, most gracious Lord;
no tender voice like thine can peace afford.

I need thee, O I need thee; every hour I need thee!
O bless me now, my Savior, I come to thee.

I need thee every hour; in joy or pain
Come quickly and abide, or life is vain

I need thee, O I need thee; every hour I need thee!
O bless me now, my Savior, I come to thee.

I need thee every hour, stay thou near by;
temptations lose their power when thou art nigh.

I need thee, O I need thee; every hour I need thee!
O bless me now, my Savior, I come to thee.

I need thee every hour; teach me thy will,
and thy rich promises in me fulfill.

I need thee, O I need thee; every hour I need thee!
O bless me now, my Savior, I come to thee.

This is the Word of God for the people of God!
Thanks be to God!
MESSAGE: "How to Deal with Temptation"

Here is a guide to practice Lectio Divina (Sacred Reading)

Silencio: Preparation
Find a place, choose a short Scripture, focus your attention, begin with a prayer.

Lectio-Read the text twice (preferably out loud), looking for the word or phrase that sticks out to me. During the brief silence afterward, repeat to yourself the word or phrase.

Meditatio-Read the text again. Reflect on how my life is touched by that word or phrase. What is it in my life that needed to hear this word? Why did that word or phrase stick out to me? Brief silent reflection.

Oratio-Read the text again and respond. Is there an invitation or challenge for me to respond to? Something God wants me to do? Give an unedited response to what God has said. This is a safe place to pour out your feelings. Write about it if you want (or not).

Contemplatio-Read the text again. Simply rest in God. Let your mind be still.

Incarnatio-Read the text one final time, resolving to carry this word with me throughout the day.

Scriptures to use: Psalm 1, 18, 23, 25, 34, 37, 40, 41, 42, 43
Any sections in Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, or really any part of the Bible. Just remember to keep it short: usually 3-10 verses.

*SONG: “Give Us Clean Hands"

We bow our hearts
We bend our knees
Oh, Spirit come make us humble
We turn our eyes
From evil things
Oh, Lord we cast down our idols

So give us clean hands
Give us pure hearts
Let us not lift our souls to another
Give us clean hands
Give us pure hearts
Let us not lift our souls to another

Oh, God let us be
A generation that seeks
Who seeks Your face,
oh, God of Jacob
Oh, God let us be
A generation that seeks
Who seeks Your face, oh, God of Jacob

We bow our hearts
We bend our knees
Oh, Spirit come make us humble
We turn our eyes From evil things
Oh, Lord we cast down our idols

So give us clean hands
Give us pure hearts
Let us not lift our souls to another
Give us clean hands,
Give us pure hearts
Let us not lift our souls to another

Oh, God let us be
generation that seeks
Who seeks Your face, oh, God of Jacob
Oh, God let us be
A generation that seeks
Who seeks Your face, oh, God of Jacob
Oh, God of Jacob
*CREED: The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic** church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is In heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
HOLY COMMUNION

"...anyone who eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord unworthily is guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. That is why you examine yourself before eating the bread and drinking the cup…"
1 Corinthians 11.27,28
PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Many times every day we are faced with choices:
To do right or do wrong
to love or to hate
to speak or to keep silent
To act selfishly or to love our neighbor
To speak words of hurt or words of love.
Many times every day we are faced with temptations.
We confess, God, that too often we have made the wrong choice and we have given in to temptation.
My sin causes pain. To me, to the people around me, and also to you, Lord. Forgive me.
[Silent confession]
Your death and resurrection assures my forgiveness and frees me from sin.
In your grace, Lord, forgive us and restore us!
SONG: "Refiner's Fire"

Purify my heart
Let me be as gold
and precious silver
Purify my heart
Let me be as gold,
pure gold,

Refiner's fire
My heart's one desire
Is to be holy
Set apart for You, Lord
I choose to be holy
Set apart for You, my Master
Ready to do Your will

Purify my heart
Cleanse me from within
And make me holy
Purify my heart
Cleanse me from my sin
Deep within

Refiner's fire
My heart's one desire
Is to be holy
Set apart for You, Lord
I choose to be holySet apart for You, my Master
Ready to do Your will

Ready to do Your will
Ready to do Your will
Hear the good news: In the name of Jesus, you are forgiven!
In the name of Jesus, we are all forgiven!
Thank you, Lord!
The bread we break is the Bread of Life. The cup we share is the Cup of Promise. These are the gifts of God for the people of God!
Thanks be to God!
