Why Did This Happen?
“A World of Wisdom”
Three Things I Learned at City On a Hill
1. Everyone has experienced some level of pain
2. Everyone has made bad choices because of their pain
Truth: When you are all about the help, hope, and healing of Jesus, you tend to attract people who need the help, hope, and healing of Jesus.
3. Everyone wants an explanation for their pain
Three Wisdom Books of the OT: Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Job
Proverbs 1:32-33 – “For the simple are killed by their turning away, and the complacency of fools destroys them; 33 but whoever listens to wisdom will dwell secure and will be at ease, without dread of disaster.”
Circumstances and Choices
Circumstances: Painful events you have no control over.
Choices: Decisions we make that have potential to bring pain into our lives.
Modern definition of wisdom: “the act of using knowledge, experience, understanding, or common sense”
a. Wisdom is an attribute
Wisdom: “An invisible set of laws that govern everything in the universe.”
Proverbs 3:19 – “The LORD by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding He established the heavens.”
b. Wisdom is an action
Proverbs 10:9 – “Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.”
c. Wisdom is available
Proverbs 1:20-23 – “Wisdom cries aloud in the street, in the markets she raises her voice; 21 at the head of the noisy streets she cries out; at the entrance of the city gates she speaks: 22 “How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge? 23 If you turn at my reproof, behold, I will pour out my spirit to you; I will make my words known to you.”
Proverbs 19:21 – “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand.”
Truth: Proverbs is about probabilities, not promises.
a. The Chance of a Long Life
Proverbs 10:27 – “The fear of the LORD prolongs life, but the years of the wicked will be short.”
b. The Chance of Godly Children
Proverbs 22:6 – “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
c. The Chance of Peace
Proverbs 15:1 – “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
d. The Chance of Wealth
Proverbs 10:4 – “A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich.”
“The Fear of the LORD”
Proverbs 1:7 – “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.”
Proverbs 9:10 – “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.”
2 Tim. 1:7: “Timidity”
Proverbs: “Reverence”
Truth: You will never find true wisdom until you admit powerlessness.
