OPENING QUESTION/DISCUSSION: What/where is a safe place/safe space for you?
*CALL TO WORSHIP
We are seeking— deeper faith, a place to belong, the feeling that God is here in this room.
We are seeking— joy that overflows, the courage to love, the conviction to act in the face of injustice.
We are seeking, but here in this space –
We are found. This is our sanctuary. God’s love is here.
God’s love is like an open door, the roof over our heads and the floor beneath our feet.
God’s love is the streetlight that guides us home and a table with room for everyone.
Today we light the candle of love to remind us of the truth that God’s love is a home for all, for you and me, for neighbors and strangers.
May this light of love burn brightly in this space and even brighter in our hearts. Let us worship God together!

*HYMN: “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear" #218 verses 1,2,4

It came upon the midnight clear,
that glorious song of old,
from angels bending near the earth
to touch their harps of gold:
"Peace on the earth, good will to men,
from heaven's all-gracious King."
The world in solemn stillness lay,
to hear the angels sing.

Still through the cloven skies they come
with peaceful wings unfurled,
and still their heavenly music floats
o'er all the weary world;
above its sad and lowly plains,
they bend on hovering wing,
and ever o'er its Babel sounds
the blessed angels sing.

And ye, beneath life's crushing load,
whose forms are bending low,
who toil along the climbing way
with painful steps and slow,
look now! for glad and golden hours
come swiftly on the wing.
O rest beside the weary road,
and hear the angels sing!

For lo! the days are hastening on,
by prophet seen of old,
when with the ever-circling years
shall come the time foretold
when peace shall over all the earth
its ancient splendors fling,
and the whole world send back the song
which now the angels sing.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION (all together)
ALL: God of safe spaces, we wish we were more like Mary, who in the face of great change, went and sought help. She did not wait for help to find her; she walked to the shelter she needed. Too often we wait silently for the world to change around us instead of speaking up for the things we need. Forgive us for failing to care for ourselves the way you would care for us. Give us the courage to be more like Mary.
God of safe places, we wish we were more like Elizabeth, who greeted Mary with laughter and contagious joy. How many people have crossed our doorstep and how many times have we failed to see them? Give us the courage of Mary, and the grace of Elizabeth. Gratefully we pray, Amen.

WORDS OF FORGIVENESS
Family of faith, even if we miss the person standing on our doorstep, even if we fail to care for ourselves the way God would care for us, even if we forget and ignore, turn away and shut down, God still loves us. There is nothing we can do to lose God’s love.
Rest in this promise:
If we get lost,
we will be found.
If we mess up,
we are forgiven.
If we withhold love,
God is lavish in loving us.
We are claimed. We are loved. We are forgiven.
Thanks be to God. Amen
This is the Word of God for the people of God!
Thanks be to God!

*SONG: “Great Rejoicing"

"Great Rejoicing"
There's gonna be a great rejoicing
There's gonna be a great rejoicing
The troubles of this world
Will wither up and die
That river of tears made by the lonely
Someday will be dry
There's gonna be a great rejoicing

There's gonna be a great joy river
There's gonna be a great joy river

Questions of this world
Someday will be known
Who's robbing you of peace
And who's the giver
There's gonna be a great joy river

Someday you will find me
Guarded in His fortress
Open heart and wings
That never touch the ground
Someday we will gather
In a grand reunion
Debts of this old world
Are nowhere to be found
Nowhere to be found

There's gonna be a great rejoicing
There's gonna be a great rejoicing
There’s gonna be a great joy river
There's gonna be a great rejoicing
There’s gonna be a great rejoicing
*CREED: Advent Creed

We believe in God the Father, creator of heaven and earth.
The one who is full of patience,
who is not afraid of silence,
who does not need to fill each moment with activity and noise.
The one who is beyond bluster and flurry,
and who does not jostle for attention.

We believe in God the Son, Saviour of creation,
who slipped into Bethlehem one night, mostly unnoticed,
who lived thirty years without headlines or hurry,
who frequently took time alone with his patient Father,
who waited for the right time to become the suffering servant,
who stood quietly before the noise of his accusers,
whose silence overpowered their words,
who died, then rose again on a quiet Sunday morning.

We believe in God the Holy Spirit,
who strengthens, empowers, renews and refreshes,
sometimes arriving with obvious power,
sometimes with the quiet breath of a whisper.

We believe in one God
who patiently waits for us,
and who longs for us to do the same.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is In heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
HOLY COMMUNION

We are going to experience our liturgy in song today. The Great Thanksgiving is the traditional communion liturgy and it rehearses God's goodness and salvation through the ages. We'll do that today in song!

The Lord be with you./And also with you.
Lift up your hearts./We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give our thanks and praise to God!
SONG: "Shout to the North"

Men of faith rise up and sing
Of the great and glorious King
You are strong
when you feel weak
In your brokenness complete

Shout to the north and the south
Sing to the east and the west
Jesus is Savior to all
Lord of heaven and earth

Rise up women of the truth
Stand and sing to broken hearts
Who can know the healing power
Of our awesome King of love

Shout to the north and the south
Sing to the east and the west
Jesus is Savior to all
Lord of heaven and earth

We've been through fire, we've been through rain
We've been refined by the power of His name
We've fallen deeper
in love with You
You've burned the
truth on our lips

Shout to the north and the south
Sing to the east and the west
Jesus is Savior to all
Lord of heaven and earth

Rise up church with broken wings
Fill this place with songs again
Of our God who reigns on high
By His grace again we'll fly

Shout to the north and the south
Sing to the east and the west
Jesus is Savior to all
Lord of heaven and earth

Lord of heaven and earth
Lord of heaven and earth
Lord of heaven and earth
The bread we break is the Bread of Life. The cup we share is the Cup of Promise. These are the gifts of God for the people of God!
Thanks be to God!
