We experience joy when we choose faith and obedience over fear. Fear permeates our everyday. Fear of rejection, failure, loss of control, the future, death, etc. is common to all and it can be traced all the way back to the Garden of Eden after Adam and Eve ate of the fruit they were immediately afraid of God. Throughout the Bible when people encounter God or one of his angels, the typical response is fear. The shepherds are no different, their first response is fear, but the angel tells them to “Fear not” and instead embrace the “good news of great joy” that salvation has come, the Messiah has arrived! The Shepherds respond with faith and obedience and meet Jesus and experience the joy which naturally follows. When we encounter the Word of God, fear can been is ready and waiting to rob us of joy, but if we confront the fear with faith in Christ, demonstrated by obedience, we will experience the amazing fruit of joy.
