OPENING QUESTION/DISCUSSION: What causes us to feel homesick? Describe a time you felt homesick.
*CALL TO WORSHIP
Can you be homesick for something you’ve never known?
We are homesick for a world where all are fed, where laughter is contagious, where the doors are wide open.
We are homesick for a world with more bridges than walls, where trees grow tall and rivers run clear.
We are homesick for a world where all people feel at home—in their bodies, in their churches, in their homes.
We long for that world.
We hope for that world.
So today we light the candle of hope, because hope keeps our hearts alive as we wait. May this light be a reminder that the wait is always worth it.
We are homesick, but we are on our way.
Let us worship God together!

*HYMN: “Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus" hymnal #196

Come, Thou long expected Jesus
Born to set Thy people free;
From our fears and sins release us,
Let us find our rest in Thee.
Israel's strength and consolation,
Hope of all the earth Thou art;
Dear desire of every nation,
Joy of every longing heart.

Born Thy people to deliver,
Born a child and yet a King,
Born to reign in us forever,
Now Thy gracious kingdom bring.
By Thine own eternal Spirit
Rule in all our hearts alone;
By Thine all sufficient merit,
Raise us to Thy glorious throne.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION (all together)
ALL: Gracious God, We find ourselves with two options every day—
to stay homesick for the world you had in mind, or to allow cynicism to win. Do we hope against hope, or do we throw in the towel?
Do we insist on a better world, or do we assume it’s impossible Forgive us for the days when cynicism wins. Forgive us for numbing our homesick hurt instead of using it to fuel a better world. Kindle in us a hope that won’t let go. Gratefully we pray, Amen.
WORDS OF FORGIVENESS
Family of faith, even when we throw in the towel, even when we give up on hope, God does not give up on us. We are loved. We are claimed. We are invited closer to God’s home. So hear and trust this good news:
ALL: There is room for us in God’s house, and nothing can separate us from that love. We are claimed. We are forgiven. We are welcomed home. Thanks be to God! Amen.

This is the Word of God for the people of God!
Thanks be to God!
MESSAGE: "Homesick and Hopeful"
*SONG: “Sing His Love"

Father, long before creation
Thou hadst chosen us in love
And that love so deep, so moving
Draws us close to Christ above
Still it keeps us, still it keeps us
Firmly fixed in Christ alone

And the world will sing His love
Yes, the world will sing His love
And we'll all join hands
Every woman, every man
And sing His love
We'll sing His love

Though the world may change its fashion
Yet our God is ever the same
His compassion and His covenant
Through all ages will remain
God's own children, God's own children
Must forever praise His name

And the world will sing His love
Yes, the world will sing His love
And we'll all join hands
Every woman, every man
And sing His love
We'll sing His love

God so loved us, God so loved us
That His only Son He gave

God's compassion is my story
It is my boasting all the day
Mercy free and never failing
Moves my will, directs my way

And the world will sing His love
Yes, the world will sing His love
And we'll all join hands
Every woman, every man
And sing His love
We'll sing His love
*CREED: The Apostles’ Creed #882

I believe in God the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived
by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died,
and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy **catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body
and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is In heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.
HOLY COMMUNION

We are going to experience our liturgy in song today. The Great Thanksgiving is the traditional communion liturgy and it rehearses God's goodness and salvation through the ages. We'll do that today in song!

The Lord be with you./And also with you.
Lift up your hearts./We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give our thanks and praise to God!
SONG: “Mighty to Save"

Everyone needs compassion
A love that's never failing
Let mercy fall on me
Everyone needs forgiveness
The kindness of a Savior
The hope of nations

Savior, he can move the mountains
My God is mighty to save
He is mighty to save
Forever author of Salvation
He rose and conquered the grave
Jesus conquered the grave

So take me as you find me
All my fears and failures
And fill my life again
I give my life to follow
Everything I believe in
And now I surrender

Savior, he can move the mountains
My God is mighty to save
He is mighty to save
Forever author of Salvation
He rose and conquered the grave
Jesus conquered the grave

Shine your light and let the whole world see
We're singing
For the glory of the risen King,
Shine your light and let the whole world see
We're singing
For the glory of the risen King

Savior, he can move the mountains
My God is mighty to save
He is mighty to save
Forever author of Salvation
He rose and conquered the grave
Jesus conquered the grave

Shine your light and let the whole world see
We're singing
For the glory of the risen King.
Shine your light and let the whole world see
We're singing
For the glory of the risen King.
