Resist the Devil and Temptation
How many times have you been tempted to do something stupid?

Big Idea: Resisting the enemy and his temptations are normal for followers of Jesus.

Scripture: James 4:7-10 NIV – 7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
o Submit vs Resist
§ Submit is to bring yourself into alignment with God and His truth.
§ Resist is to stand opposed or take your stand against

How do we resist the enemy and the temptations he throws at us?
o Live on High Alert
§ 1 Peter 5:8-9 NLT – 8 Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. 9 Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are.
§ 1 Peter 2:11 NLT – 11 Dear friends, I warn you as “temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls.

o Stay close to God and do things that keep you connected to truth
§ James 4:8a NLT - 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you.
§ Psalm 27:8 NLT – 8 My heart has heard you say, “Come and talk with me.” And my heart responds, “Lord, I am coming.”
§ Psalm 63:1 NLT – O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water.

o Set boundaries to keep from hurting yourself and others
§ James 4:8b NLT - Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded
§ Matthew 15:18-20 NLT – 18 But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you. 19 For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander. 20 These are what defile you. Eating with unwashed hands will never defile you.”
§ Matthew 5:27-30 NLT – 27 “You have heard the commandment that says, ‘You must not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 So if your eye—even your good eye—causes you to lust, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your hand—even your stronger hand—causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.

Where do you need to resist the Devil?
o This promise is for you!
§ James 4:7 NIV - 7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
§ 1 Corinthians 10:13 NLT – 13 The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.
