What happens when we break the rules?
We are free to choose, but not to control the consequences
The Purpose of the Law
Gal. 3:24 Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith.
Gal. 3:25 But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.
It all comes down to a choice
Josh. 24:14 “Now, therefore, fear the LORD and serve Him in sincerity and truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD.
Josh. 24:15 If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
We will serve our choices
Religion/Rules vs Relationship
Is. 1:10 Hear the word of the LORD,
you rulers of Sodom;
give ear to the instruction of our God,
you people of Gomorrah.
Is. 1:11 “What are your multiplied sacrifices to me?”
says the LORD.
“I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams
and the fat of fed cattle;
and I take no pleasure in the blood of bulls, lambs or goats.
Is. 1:12 When you come to appear before me,
who requires of you this trampling of my courts?
Is. 1:13 Bring your worthless offerings no longer,
incense is an abomination to me.
New moon and sabbath, the calling of assemblies —
I cannot endure iniquity and the solemn assembly.
Is. 1:14 I hate your new moon festivals and your appointed feasts,
they have become a burden to me;
I am weary of bearing them.
Is. 1:15 So when you spread out your hands in prayer,
I will hide my eyes from you;
yes, even though you multiply prayers,
I will not listen.
Your hands are covered with blood.
Is. 1:16 Wash yourselves, make yourselves clean;
remove the evil of your deeds from my sight.
Cease to do evil,
Is. 1:17 Learn to do good;
Reprove the ruthless,
Defend the orphan,
Plead for the widow.
Is. 1:18 “Come now, and let us reason together,”
Says the LORD,
“Though your sins are as scarlet,
They will be as white as snow;
Though they are red like crimson,
They will be like wool.”
