What is actually the source of my salvation? My actions or Jesus?
Five Solas
Faith AloneRomans 1:16-17
Grace AloneEphesians 2:8-9
Scripture Alone2 Timothy 3:16-17
Christ AloneI Peter 2:9-10
Glory to God AloneIsaiah 42:8
Salvation is in Christ alone, by grace alone, through faith alone
What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
James 2:14-17
But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.
James 2:18-19
You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless? Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.
James 2:20-22
And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,” and he was called God’s friend. You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.
James 2:23
In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.
James 2:2-26
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile. For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last,[a] just as it is written: “The righteous will live by faith.”
Romans 1:16-17
“From early childhood, I was accustomed to turn pale and tremble whenever I heard the name of Christ mentioned, for I was taught to look upon him as a stern and wrathful judge.”
-Martin Luther
Shame and Blame Gospel:
“You are bad, God is mad, but Jesus took your beating. So, try harder and you might make it to heaven.”
-James Bryan Smith
Faith that Saves is a Faith that Works
Salvation is not a prize to be won, but a gift to be accepted.
Justification – saved by grace through faith.
The gospel does not say ‘trust God and he will love you’. The gospel says ‘God already loves you so trust him.’ Faith is not a work that saves us. It is our acknowledgement that we are saved.’
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast.
-Ephesians 2:8-9
Have you ever been given a gift that you could never have gotten for yourself? Has anyone ever sacrificed a huge amount for you without getting anything in return?
-John Ortberg
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast.
-Ephesians 2:8-9
Benediction
We are saved by grace, through faith. There is nothing we could or can ever do to justify our worth and value outside of Jesus. Grace is a hard thing for us to understand, because our world knows so little of it. Grace isn’t about getting what you want. It’s about the Holy glory of God coming to find you in the flesh, interrupting the plans you had for life and revealing God’s plans for you and for the world and altering your life forever. Grace is the game changer.
