ECC-Evangelical Covenant Church
The Hope of Glory: Practice Makes Permanent
We are glad you are with us today. We believe that Jesus not only forgives us and makes a way for us to know him, but he transforms us and renews the image of God within us, then sends us out into the world. We hope you'll join us this week as we begin a new series on what that looks like. We worship together each Sunday morning at 10:30am on Facebook, YouTube, or in person.

The Hope of Glory: Practice Makes Permanent
June 6, 2021
Second Sunday after Pentecost
Kate Cogswell, Director of Women's Ministries and Spiritual Formation
Write your main take away from this week's sermon below:
Questions to ponder.
What are 3 words you would use to describe your life with God today?
What are 3 words you would LIKE to describe your life with God?
What might the Holy Spirit be inviting you to do to grow from where you are to where you long to be?
Questions to ponder.
What has been your experience with spiritual practices?
Was the thought that we all have a soul-training plan new to you? How does that idea influence your thoughts and feeling about creating an intentional soul-training plan?
What parts of your current rhythm can you reframe as a soul-training practice that draws you closer to God?
Questions to ponder.
If you engaged with James Bryan Smith's The Good and Beautiful Community, which of the false and true narratives have been most impactful to you?
Questions to ponder.
Read Romans 12:1-2, reflect on God's invitations to you in this passage.

So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you.

In what ways might it be an invitation to creating a soul-training plan? Are there any next steps it inspires for you?
A practice to engage.
Is there anyone with whom you might share the core message of today’s sermon? How would you summarize what you heard if someone asked you, “What happened at church today?”
A practice to engage. Author James Bryan Smith describes a soul-training plan as "a balanced and wholesome pattern that helps define how we want to live. It is a constant reminder of how we would like to live. It can help us to go beyond merely good intentions and into action.”

What is your next step in creating your own soul-training plan? You can find a guide and the template at ecclife.net/soul-training.
Prayer for the Second Sunday after Pentecost
O God, from whom all good proceeds: Grant that by your inspiration we may think those things that are right, and by your merciful guiding may do them; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
