Relationship Goals–Part 2
Trust. Forgiveness. Grace. Love. These are elements that every relationship needs to thrive. These are the qualities that we should embody towards one another. These are relationship goals. Many of us set goals for ourselves—but how many of us set goals for our relationship? Without a doubt, our lives can be significantly enriched when we connect in meaningful ways with others. But that isn't always easy to achieve. Intentionality and commitment are required if we desire those things. Throughout this series, we’ll explore what we can do to improve our relationships, continue to help them grow, and discover how we can achieve these goals together.

Problem | Forgiveness doesn’t seem fair
Solution | It takes faith to forgive
Forgiveness is the release, on the part of the creditor or offended party, of any expectation that a debt will be repaid or that an offender will receive punishment for an offense. –Lexham Theological Workbook

Today's Takeaway | It takes faith to forgive
Three Reasons Why We Should Forgive
We forgive because we are recipients of God’s forgiveness

We forgive because we know God is sovereign
Three Reasons Why We Should Forgive
We forgive because we are recipients of God’s forgiveness
We forgive because we know God is sovereign
We forgive because we know that it provides the best hope for good to thrive
Sometimes a person’s fire went out and he needed to borrow some live coals to restart his fire. Giving a person coals in a pan to carry home “on his head” was a neighborly, kind act; it made friends, not enemies. Also, the kindness shown in giving someone food and water makes him ashamed of being an enemy, and brings God’s blessing on the benefactor. Compassion, not revenge, should characterize believers. Alternately, light on this passage may come from an Egyptian expiation ritual, in which a person guilty of some wrongdoing would carry a pan of burning coals on his head as a sign of his repentance. Thus treating one’s enemy kindly may cause him to repent. –Walvoord
