Introduction
Ecclesiology: The Doctrine of the Church Pt. 1

l. THE MEANING OF CHURCH
Εκκλησια==The "Called Out"
Romans 8:28-29 For we know that God causes all things to work together for Good, to those who love Him and are CALLED according to His purpose. “For those whom He foreknew He predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, and those who He predestined He Called….”

Ephesians 4:1 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called,
1. We Are Called Out of
Out of Darkness into light
Out of the world into his Kingdom
Out of Death into Life

2. We Are Called to Be Plan B
Matthew 21:33
Cast of Characters:
1. Vine-yard owner=God
2. The Vineyard=Kingdom of God
3. Vine Growers==Israel
4. Land-owners servants=Prophets
5. Land-owners Son=The Messiah
Vs.40 A Question
Vs.41 An Answer=“Did you never read in the Scriptures, ‘The stone which the builders rejected, This became the chief cornerstone;
“Therefore I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people, producing the fruit of it. “And he who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust.”
εθνος=People, Nation, Gentile, Pagan
Ephesians 2:12 member that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
II. THE EXPRESSION OF THE CHURCH
Matthew 16:18 – “I will build my church, and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.”
Matthew 18:17 – “Tell it to the church.”
1 Corinthians 11:18 – “Coming together as a church”
1 Corinthians 12:28 – “God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers.”
a. The Universal Church
Why Ephesians are About the Universal Church
i. It was uniquely written
ii. It doesn’t reference any local issues
iii. Some early copies don’t include “in Ephesus”
Four Aspects of the Universal Church
1. It is being built by Jesus Himself (Matt. 16:13-18)
2. It is located in heaven
Hebrews 12:22-24 – “But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in joyful gathering, and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven.”
“Firstborn” – Jesus! (Col. 1:15, 18; Rom. 8:28-29)
3. It includes all believers of all time
1 Thessalonians 4:16-17 – “For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.”
4. Christ is coming back for the universal church
Truth: Participation in the universal church comes through participation in the local church.

B. The Local Church
Why should you be involved in the local church?
1. They are of immense importance to Jesus and the apostles
2. You can’t live out the Christian life outside of it
Hebrews 13:17 – “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.”
1 Timothy 5:17 – “Let the elders who rule well be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in preaching and teaching.”
1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 – “We ask you, brothers, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.”
