Crossing the Lines
Pastor Travis Marshall
May 2, 2021
In a world of conditions, prerequisites and fees,
the Gospel says all you need is nothing, all you need is need.
Jesus speaking: 'My house shall be a house of prayer'... (Luke 19:46)
“The gospel is the line-crossing power that always tears down walls, eliminates barriers and ever expands the table so everyone has a place.”
“The particular encounter between Phillip and the Ethiopian eunuch shows how the gospel power is unhindered and is mightily expanding and crossing surprising and unexpected lines of race, gender, age, social, and religious systems that were supported by weighty tradition, law, religion and generational obedience.”
“This story is less a story about how Philip converted the Ethiopian eunuch and more about how the eunuch converted Philip.”
The Good News (Gospel) Means…
1) …we occupy a different space.

“Get up and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza." (This is a wilderness road.) 27 So he got up and went." (26b-27)
2) …we embody a different posture.

Then the Spirit said to Philip, “Go over to this chariot and join it." So Philip ran up to it and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah. He asked, "Do you understand what you are reading?" (29-30)

3) ...we have a different orientation to power.

Then Philip began to speak, and starting with this scripture, he proclaimed to him the good news about Jesus. (35)
4) ...we abide in relationships in a radically different way.

Philip and the eunuch, went down into the water, and Philip baptized him. (38b)
“It is the Holy Spirit who makes the gospel freely move forward cross cultural and geographical boundaries: from Jerusalem to Samaria and from the city to the wilderness.”
