Maintaining Joy in Trials
James 1:2-4
Pastor Jerry Koller
To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations.
· These individuals were Jewish converts or believers.
· The entire letter of James is directed to believers, not unbelievers.
An Adjusted Mindset—Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds... (James 1:2)
· Consider means to think about something carefully so that you can take what you are considering into account.
From Disgust to Joy—Scripture does not say they should be “happy.”
Joy is a supernatural delight in God and in God's goodness.
· It is supernaturallydeveloped through the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the life of a Christ follower.
· Delight means to find pleasure or satisfaction.
· Pure, unblemished, unstained, untainted joy can only be found in God.
What is Good About Trials?
· Trials are a kind of spiritual classroom.
· In them, we reap the benefits of God’s goodness.
We should consider it pure joy ...because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. (James 1:3)
· Testing refers to the examination of the character of something to see how well it works or to prove the validity of something.
· The testing of our faith is another way of saying we put our faith into practice.
Develops Endurance—Scripture says the testing of your faith develops perseverance. (NIV)
· The NASB says the testing of your faith produces endurance.
· The ESV says the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.
· Persevere means to persist, to keep at it.
· Endurance is the power to withstand hardship or stress.
· Steadfastness means to remain firm, unshakable, steady, or unwavering.
How Long Must We Endure?
· The answer is found in verse 4. Perseverance must finish its work.
· We need to continue until perseverance accomplishes what it is designed to accomplish.
Maturity—The meaning behind maturity had to do with being “fully developed.”
· The Greek word translated mature is the same word we find in Hebrews 5, where the author talks about maturing or growing up in Christ.
Complete—The word completecarries with it the idea of “wholeness.”
Lacking In Nothing—God’s goal for us is to become Christ-like; to grow and mature in faith.
· Trials Work For Us, Not Against Us
· Trials, Rightly Used, Help Us Mature/Grow Up
Happy Birthday!
· Steve Follman (5/2)
· Larry Dobberstein (5/3)
· Chelsea Hagger (5/3)
· Connie Hollis (5/9)
Children’s Worship HVAC Unit
We are continuing to raise funds to replace the HVAC unit which services the first floor of the addition. So far, we have collected $23,987.69! We are estimating that we will need $30-35,000 for the new unit, so we are making good progress towards covering the expense. Thank you so much for your generosity! If you’d like to contribute towards this project, you can do so online or by noting HVAC on your check.
