2 Thessalonians 3:1-5
Gospel-Focused Prayer
BIG IDEA: As Christians, we should make it a habit to pray for the success of the Gospel
I. Pray for the Success of the Gospel (vs 1)

2 Thessalonians 3:1- Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run swiftly and be glorified, just as it is with you,

A. Prayer is to be the habit of God’s people

Pray (προσεύχομαι proseuchomai) - to make a petition to God. Here it is in the present imperative, meaning it is a command to keep on praying.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 - pray without ceasing

Like Paul
1 Thessalonians 1:2–3 - We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers, 3remembering without ceasing your work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the sight of our God and Father

Like Jesus
Luke 6:12 - Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.

B. Prayer should focus on the success of the Gospel

1. That the Word run swiftly

Psalm 147:15 - He sends out His command to the earth; His word runs very swiftly.

Ephesians 6:18–19 - praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints—19 and for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel

Colossians 4:2–3 - Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving; 3 meanwhile praying also for us, that God would open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in chains

2. and be glorified

Acts 13:48 - Now when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord. And as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed.
II. Pray for the Safety of the Messenger (vs 2)

2 Thessalonians 3:2 - and that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men; for not all have faith.

delivered (ῥύομαι rhuomai) - rescued from danger, saved

Romans 15:30–31 - Now I beg you, brethren, through the Lord Jesus Christ, and through the love of the Spirit, that you strive together with me in prayers to God for me, 31 that I may be delivered from those in Judea who do not believe, and that my service for Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints

from unreasonable and wicked men

unreasonable (ἄτοπος atopos) - unusual, surprising, out of place, improper in an evil sense. Not just weird, but not conforming to what is good and right
NASB - perverse and evil men
ESV - wicked and evil men
III. Trust in God for the Results (3-5)

2 Thessalonians 3:3–5 - But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one. 4 And we have confidence in the Lord concerning you, both that you do and will do the things we command you. 5 Now may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Christ.

A. God will keep us from losing our faith

2 Thessalonians 3:3 - But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one.

Philippians 1:6 - being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ;

Romans 8:28–30 - And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. 29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.

Romans 8:38–39 - For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

B. God will cause us to be obedient

2 Thessalonians 3:4 - And we have confidence in the Lord concerning you, both that you do and will do the things we command you.

Ephesians 2:8–10 - For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

Philippians 2:12–13 - Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

C. God will give us love and endurance

2 Thessalonians 3:5 - Now may the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God and into the patience of Christ.

Both God’s love for us and our love for God
1 John 3:1 - Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.

1 John 4:19 - We love Him because He first loved us.

The Patience of Christ

Hebrews 12:1–2 - Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
