Chestnut Ridge Church
Jonah–Part 1
The tale of Jonah and the giant fish is one of the most beloved stories of the Old Testament. Although the book of Jonah is only four short chapters, it is packed with life lessons about God’s sovereignty and grace. Within this section of the Bible, Jonah helps us understand one of the most important questions in life—what happens when we don’t listen to God? Join us for this fun new series beginning Sunday, April 11th!

Problem | We don’t listen very well to God.
Solution | God knows how to get our attention. We can learn things the easy way or the hard way—sometimes we have to reach rock bottom.
”…they could have been sticks of various lengths, flat stones like coins, or some kind of dice; but their exact nature is unknown. The closest modern practice to casting lots is likely flipping a coin.” –
Perhaps marked stones were put in a container, and one was taken out. God expressed His sovereignty over Jonah’s affairs, causing the lot to “fall” on His disobedient prophet. –J.D. Hannah
The city of Nineveh was located on the east side of the Tigris River about 550 miles northeast of Samaria. That distance required a journey of more than a month, if Jonah traveled the normal distance of 15–20 miles a day. The great city was second in size only to Babylon. It was in modern-day Iraq opposite the modern town of Mosul. –J.D. Hannah
