Matters of the Heart: Guilt
NIV Dictionary of the Bible defines guilt as: The deserving of punishment because of the violation of a law or a breach of conduct.
How can God forgive sin without punishment? (Exodus 21: 23-25 requires punishment). Punishment did occur - that is what Lent is preparing us to celebrate. On Good Friday Jesus took the sin of the whole world for all time on Himself and died as the sacrifice for all sin. Then the resurrection on Easter Sunday proved that God had accepted Jesus' sacrificial payment for the sins of the world and all who die believing in Him will be raised to eternal life.
It's not enough to filter what comes out of our hearts, we need to monitor what goes into our hearts as well. That's what Solomon meant when he said we are to "guard" our hearts. When have you not guarded your heart and let something in that caused pain later?
One false belief that we might let into our hearts is that God's love for us is conditioned on our being lovable. And when we are not lovable, He condemns us. But John 3: 17 says something different.
So, How do you deal with guilt? You confess the sin that's causing the guilt and in faith receive the forgiveness that Jesus won for you on the cross and in the empty tomb.
