The Theology of Work

1. God created the universe through WORK
2. It is the WORK of God that can cause men to understand who God really is
3. God made mankind in His image… to be WORKERS
4. God commanded that we should NOT OVERWORK
5. God promised to bless His people’s WORK if they would obey His Word
6. WORK, apart from a relationship with and a purpose in God, CAN BE MEANINGLESS
7. God identifies someone WHO WILL NOT WORK as a sluggard and a fool
8. DILIGENT WORK should mark God’s people
1 Thessalonians 4:10-12 NASB2020

2 Thessalonians 3:10-13 NASB2020

9. Pastors and teaching leaders of the Church should set the pace in hard work
10. All of us are to WORK with a mind “set above” on the Lordship of Christ
The Big Idea…

When Jesus Christ is Supreme & Central to You, Work Matters

1. My work displays my respect for the Lord
2. My work displays my commitment to the Lord
3. My work anticipates my reward from the Lord
“If you wanted to punish a man… so severely that even the most hardened criminal would quail, all you have to do is to make his work meaningless.”

-Fyodor Dostoevsky
“When we study the biblical value of work, we see that God values all kinds of careers. Scripture teaches that God is sovereign in dispensing gifts, abilities, and interests. It reminds us that He guides His people into many different careers. Rather than thinking of higher and lower callings, we should recognize that any calling from God is a high calling, simply because He made it. If there is such a thing as a “lower calling” it is a career chosen out of a wrong attitude or in rebellion against God’s leading.”

-John Bernbaum & Simon Steer
Why Work? Careers & Employment in Biblical Perspective

“The average person puts only 25% of his energy and ability into his work. The world takes its hat off to those who put in more than 50% of their capacity, and stands on its head for those few and far between souls who devote 100%.”

-Andrew Carnegie
4. My treatment of workers reflects my accountability
“Observe that God has often called people to places of dignity and honor when they have the busy and honest employment of their vocation. Saul was finding his father’s donkeys and David was guarding his father’s flocks when called to leadership in the Kingdom of Israel. They shepherds were feeding their flocks when given the glorious revelation of the Messiah. Jesus called 4 apostles from their fishing and Matthew in the midst of collecting Roman taxes. Amos was called from among the horsemen of Tekoa, Moses was called from keeping Jethro’s flocks, Gideon was called while threshing wheat, Elisha was called from plowing with 12 oxen. God doesn’t call a lazy man or woman; He never encourages idleness. But He does love to honor those even in the midst of what some might call the lowest or most unnoticed employment.”

-D.L. Moody
