CONVERSATION STARTERS
Conversation Starters help us dig deeper, connecting Sunday’s sermons with our Monday lives. These prompts have been designed to help Community Groups grow in their relationship with God, with one another, and with their neighbors. Please know that these questions are meant to be a resource to you. You do not have to follow them verbatim or get through them all. We trust you to know your group and to ask the questions based on your group needs.

1. What surprised you about your practice of theFormed.life this week? What was difficult?

2. What stood out to you from Luke 21?

3. Many people read passages like this and become anxious. How does this speak comfort to followers of Jesus?

4. We want things that are wrong in this world to change, but so often we also struggle with judgment. Are these sentiments compatible or not, and how?

5. Why do you think Jesus taught so much about the coming judgment? What purpose do you think He had in mind for explaining that these things were ahead?
Title: Watch Yourselves
Scripture: Luke 21:1-38
Speaker: Tim Spanburg, TimS@ChristCommunityKC.org
>> Do not net your heart be weighed down...with dissipation
>> Do not let your heart be weighed down with…drunkenness
"Never forget that when we are dealing with any pleasure in its healthy and normal and satisfying form, we are, in a sense, on the Enemy's ground. I know we have won many a soul through pleasure. All the same, it is His invention, not ours. He made the pleasures; all our research so far has not enabled us to produce one. All we can do is to encourage the humans to take the pleasures which our Enemy has produced, at times, or in ways, or in degrees, which He has forbidden. Hence we always try to work away from the natural condition of any pleasure to that in which it is least natural, least redolent of its Maker, and least pleasurable." - CS Lewis
>> Do not let your heart be weighed down with...the cares of this life.
In the presence of his integrity, our own pretense is exposed. In the presence of his constancy, our cowardice is brought to light. In the presence of his fierce love for God and for us, our own hardness of heart is revealed. Take him out of the room and all those things become relative. I am not that much worse than you are nor you than I…
But leave him in the room and there is no room to hide. He is the light of the world. In his presence, people either fall down to worship him or do everything they can to extinguish his light. - Barbara Brown Taylor, Bread & Wine
>> What traps do Christians need to pay attention to most?
- Repentance
How do we measure the size of a fire? By the number of firefighters and fire engines sent to fight against it. How do we measure the seriousness of a medical condition? By the amount of risk the doctors take in prescribing dangerous antibiotics or surgical procedures. How do we measure the gravity of sin and the incomparable vastness of God’s love for us? By looking at the magnitude of what God has done for us in Jesus, who became like a common criminal for our sake in and our place. - Fleming Rutledge
