The grace of the gospel is both incomparable and undeserved. There’s nothing like it and no other way to get it except through faith in Jesus. This truth is crucial when it comes to serving the One who saved us—Jesus. In 1 Corinthians, Paul teaches us how to view ourselves by expressing how he views himself and the other apostles. We'll study this in the Serve series and see a powerful picture of serving.

1 Corinthians 4:6-8
Now these things, brethren, I have figuratively applied to myself and Apollos for your sakes, so that in us you may learn not to exceed what is written, so that no one of you will become arrogant in behalf of one against the other. For who regards you as superior? What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it? You are already filled, you have already become rich, you have become kings without us; and indeed, I wish that you had become kings so that we also might reign with you.
The idea of servant-leader is first found in Scripture and based on the life of Jesus Christ.
Mark 10:45
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.
The Call to Serve
Let a man regard us…as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God… v.1
We have the honor of serving under the Master and Commander, Jesus Christ, as we help propel the gospel and the kingdom forward toward eternity.
Have you found a place to serve Christ and further the kingdom?
Proverbs 16:18
Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before stumbling.
James 4:6
God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.
Matthew 23:10–12
Do not be called leaders; for One is your Leader, that is, Christ. But the greatest among you shall be your servant. “Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled; and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.”
Is pride something you struggle with? Do you recognize the need to lay it aside?
What does humility look like?
Humility does not go beyond what Scripture teaches.
1 Corinthians 4:6a
…so that in us you may learn not to exceed what is written.
Humility does not try to seem better than others.
1 Corinthians 4:6b
…so that no one of you will become arrogant in behalf of one against the other.
When we look at others serving God, we should make no comparison, have no competition, and issue no criticism.
Humility does not presume to deserve God’s blessing.
1 Corinthians 4:7
What do you have that you did not receive? And if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?
Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the GIFT of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Can you see how the presence of restraint demonstrates the absence of pride?
