Text: Proverbs 3:1-8; 16:1-4

Conversation Starters help us dig deeper, connecting Sunday’s sermons with our everyday lives. These prompts have been designed to help Community Groups grow in their relationship with God, with one another, and with their neighbors.

In Proverbs 3:1-8, we are invited to wholeheartedly cling to God’s wisdom, walking in humility and submit to the instructions of our Heavenly Father in all of life. This task of is challenging. But by God’s grace, it is possible.

When you were a child, who had your best interest in mind? How did you know that they cared about you?

READ PROVERBS 3:1-8. What stands out to you?

Did you notice that the odd numbered verses in Proverbs 3:1-8 (vv. 1, 3, 5, and 7) all contain commands, while the even verses (vv. 2, 4, 6, and 8) each contain reasons for those commands?

It’s been said, “Rules, without reasons, lead to resentment.” Why is it important to know not just what we are instructed to do, but also why we are instructed to do it?

Proverbs 3 insists that God’s instruction forms us into healthy, whole, admirable people. Is that easy or difficult for you to believe? Why?

Proverbs often speaks about the “heart,” or the decision-making center of a person. In the Old Testament, the “heart” refers to a person's feelings, thoughts, and emotions. How would you describe your “heart”? What desires, thoughts, feelings, and values do you notice shaping your decisions?

In Proverbs 3:5-6, we’re invited to trust God in all things. Think about how deeply you trust a dear friend or your spouse. How did your trust for that person grow? By comparison, how well would you say you trust God?

Proverbs 3 is presented as wisdom from a loving parent to a growing child. Think about the tone and attention of a loving parent. How does that shape the way you understand God’s instructions?

PRAY. Invite God to show you areas of your life - perhaps your work, your friendships, your family, technology, etc. - where you are prone to forget Him. Ask Him to give you an awareness of His presence in all of your life.
