Our advent services are reminders of the hope that is ours in Jesus Christ’s coming into this world born as a baby prophesied sometimes hundreds of years before His birth. Each Sunday there is a special theme and the lighting of a candle that goes with that theme. Today is the theme of “Hope.” Hope is something we can’t do without. Each of us needs to hope.

Charles Swindoll tells the story of a submarine “years ago an S-4 submarine was rammed by a ship off the coast of Massachusetts. It sank immediately. The entire crew was trapped in a prison house of death. Every effort was made to rescue the crew, but ultimately failed. Near the end of the ordeal, a deep-sea diver who was doing everything in his power to find a way for the crew’s release thought he heard tapping on the steel wall of the sunken sub. He placed his helmet up against the side of the vessel and he realized it was the Morse Code. He attached himself to the side and he spelled out in his mind the message being tapped from within. It was repeating the same question. The question was, from within: “Is…there…any…hope?” (Charles Swindoll, Tales of the Tardy Oxcart)

Yes, there is hope in the person of Jesus Christ the Son of the Living God.
Surely you remember Moses, the well trained and educated man, who spent most of his first forty years in the house of the Pharaoh and then the next forty years as a shepherd when he met God in a burning bush. It was then God sent him back to Egypt and he would be considered the “Deliverer” of the Children of God. At the time of our Scripture today, Moses was 40 years removed from stepping back into Egypt to deliver the Hebrews from the hand and rod of Pharaoh. He stood now at the brink of the Promised Land telling those he rescued that God would send “another” deliverer but this time this Deliverer would be a prophet like him and yet quite different, even though this new Prophet would be one of them, it would be God who raised Him up as the new Deliverer for all mankind. It would be God who placed His words in the mouth of this new Deliverer and if anyone would not listen to His Words then God would hold them to account.

I maintain that Moses, the great Deliverer of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, is the for-runner of the “True and Everlasting, Almighty Deliverer” sent from God to be born of a virgin and to be born in a stable and laid in a manger by His mother and His foster father. God Almighty said to Moses that He would “raise up for you a Prophet like me from among your own brothers.” God was telling Moses and us, that this “Prophet” would be born a man, a Hebrew just like him and the others who were Hebrews and a part of Israel. As Moses delivered the people of God from the hand of Pharaoh, Jesus would deliver His people Israel from the slavery of sin and death. But God gave a warning to Moses to share with all who would one day read the words of God, and that was that those who would not heed this Prophet’s words would be held accountable for not believing and doing what He said.
Even 1,407 years before Jesus was born a Jew, Moses was told by God He would come, raised up for just that purpose. What a hope for a true deliverer who could take your sins away and give to your eternal life. He was Man and yet He was God, what a mystery.

When the Israelites of the Old Testament would read these passages in their sacred book they would think one day there will be a Deliverer come for them too. They would think, “We are enslaved by all those who hate the Hebrews and particularly (in the day of Jesus Christ) the Romans who have dominated us and oppressed us; surely the Lord Jehovah will send that Prophet-like Moses to deliver us from our slavery.” They had the hope of their belief that God would do again for them what He had done for their ancestors who were enslaved in Egypt. They called this prophet-like Moses, the Messiah, the anointed One who would bring justice to the people and rescue them from all their enemies and set up His kingdom on earth.

That was not far from the truth. There is also in that same Old Testament the description of the true Messiah that would come and deliver them from their enemy, sin and death! It is this Messiah that they truly needed and all the rest of mankind as well. Our Deliverer would come as a new born baby born in a manger in the city of David, Bethlehem. When he had grown into manhood he would be a simple carpenter from out of the small town of Nazareth. Even before He was born His mother Mary and her betrothed husband Joseph, would have to go back to his birth place of Bethlehem, where Jesus the Christ would be born. The Hope of Heaven came to this little sleepy town and they did not even know that the “Deliverer” of their sins was born that night and would be the One who would die in their place upon a wooden cross five miles away some thirty three years later so they could finally be delivered for eternity to the Heavenly Father.

Our Hope is not built on some misunderstood prophecy but on the truth that God said that He would send His only Son to be born of a virgin and to live a perfect life but then have to die for the sins of the world. Jesus told those who followed Him that He would not stay dead but arise from the grave alive forevermore! Jesus is our Hope and if you put your faith in Him He will give you that eternal life through the grace of God.
The Solid Rock
1. My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust the sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

Refrain:
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand.

2. When darkness veils His lovely face,
I rest on His unchanging grace;
In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.

3. His oath, His covenant, His blood
Support me in the whelming flood;
When all around my soul gives way,
He then is all my hope and stay.

4. When He shall come with trumpet sound,
Oh, may I then in Him be found;
Dressed in His righteousness alone,
Faultless to stand before the throne.
My dear friends, if you have built your life on anything other than Jesus Christ then you need to stop now and repent, turn from that way of life and turn to Jesus to start your life over. Only He can give you hope and strength for this life. All the difficulty you will face, you will not face alone; He will be there with you in strength and in power, giving you all you need to face the trials that come your way. If there is sickness, we have the Great Physician. If there is sorrow because of death or any other difficulty, we have the Great Comforter. There is nothing that you face in this world that Jesus can’t either take away or help you through it till the end. His promise is that He will be there, not that everything works the way you want it. We have a God that is so concerned for us that He wants the best for us not just give us what we want.
What we really need is a Deliverer for our sin, One who will see us as we are and love us no matter what. Won’t you trust Him now?
Trust in Him and allow the blood of the cross to wash over you and cleanse you of your sin, only Jesus can do that, because only Jesus died for you. He is the HOPE of the world. I urge you today, come to Jesus!

Invitation

Dear friend if you are reading this by way of the internet please know that you are loved and cared for.  If you have no relationship with God the Father through Jesus Christ His Son then I invite you to trust Him by faith and receive Him as your personal Savior.  Jesus Christ died on the cross for the sin of everyone in the world that they may have eternal life.  And that means you too! All of us have sinned and all are guilty before Almighty God who made us to have fellowship with Him.  But sin broke that ability to have a relationship and Jesus has restored the possibility to know God personally through His sacrifice.  Please know that if you will seek God and turn from your sin and pray He will respond with His love and give to you a personal relationship through your faith, belief, in His Son and the sacrifice He made just for you.  He will call for a change in your life too.  He wants you to follow Him not the world, not your own desires but to follow Jesus.  That brings a life change when you turn from sin and self and by faith believe in Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord.  There is no Savior without Him being Lord of your life.  Your willingness to change by following Him daily in your life will be the proof of your faith.
When life throws its curves your way and you have found yourself broken by others or by the world, let us introduce you to the only One who can help you…Jesus!
