Matthew 25:31-46
"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.' Then the righteous will answer him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.' "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.' Then they also will answer, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?' Then he will answer them, saying, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.' And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."
I. Context

A. Same Time of Teaching that we’ve been studying in Luke, told by Matthew.
1. Fig Tree puts on leaves.
2. Parable of the Talents.

B. All this teaching is in response to the question “when are these things going to happen?”

C. Matthew Closes this with this PROPHECY!
1. Parables have a distinct structure
a) “Then the Kingdom of Heaven will be like...”
b) “For it will be like...”
2. This is Jesus simply telling the disciples what’s going to happen. “When...”
II. Common Preaching

A. “The least of these” are poor people.
B. Sheep are Us
C. Goats are fake believers with a theoretical faith. James “show me you faith without work and I’ll show you my faith BY my works”
D. New interpretation- 1850’s
III. The Characters (Or Why does Jesus hate Goats?)

Ezekiel 34:17, 22 “As for you, my flock, thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I judge between sheep and sheep, between rams and male goats. I will rescue my flock; they shall no longer be a prey. And I will judge between sheep and sheep.”

A. The Sheep on the Right. Sheep regularly grazed with goats.

B. The Goats on the Left.
1. Goats have a higher milk yield (Land flowing with milk and Honey)
2. The word used is eriphos or male goat.
3. Shepherds have to cull the male goats to ensure that he has milking females.

C. The point is NOT the breed, but the separating.

D. The King
IV. The King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?' And the King will answer them, 'Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.

A. If it’s about the works why are they surprised?

B. Matthew 12:46-49 While he was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him. But he replied to the man who told him, "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?"And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, "Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother."

C. Matthew 10:40-42 "Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward. And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward."

D. The language of inheritance “Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world”.
1. No one earns an inheritance. Ephesians 1:11-15 “In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory. For this reason, because I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints.”
2. This Text is about identity and fruit bearing.
V. When the Son of Man comes in his glory.

Daniel 7:13-14 "I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.

A. All the angels with him.
Zechariah 14:5 And you shall flee to the valley of my mountains, for the valley of the mountains shall reach to Azal. And you shall flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the LORD my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.

B. He will sit on his glorious throne.
1. Before Him will be gathered all the nations.
2. He will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
3. He will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left.

C. Revelation 19:11-16 Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.
